Computer Virus

Introduction to Virus
•A computer virus is a malicious software program loaded
onto a user's computer without the user's knowledge and
performs malicious actions.

•It can self-replicate, inserting itself onto other programs or

files, infecting them in the process.

•Not all computer viruses are destructive though.

• An program that reproduces itself .

• It can damage, delete, corrupt data or degrade the performance.

• Computer viruses currently cause billions of dollars' worth of

economic damage each year, due to causing system failure, wasting
computer resources, corrupting data, increasing maintenance costs,
stealing personal information etc.

• The term "virus" is also misused by extension to refer to other types

of malware. "Malware" encompasses computer viruses along with
many other forms of malicious software,
How do computer viruses spread?

Computer viruses usually spread in one of three ways: from

removable media; from downloads off the Internet; and from
e-mail attachments.

Although the Internet gets a bad rap as a source of viruses,

you're no more likely to contract a virus from the Web than
you are from packaged software.
How can computer viruses be prevented?
Install a firewall, Install Antivirus software like

• AVAST Antivirus.
•AVG Antivirus.
•Avira Antivirus.
•Bitdefender Antivirus.
•Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
•Ad-Aware Antivirus

A firewall is a program that screens incoming internet and network traffic.

Along with your virus program, it can help prevent unauthorized access to your
computer.
Types And Forms of virus
TYPES OF VIRUS

1. BOOT SECTOR
2. PROGRAM FILE VIRUS
3. MACRO VIRUS
4. MULTIPARTITE VIRUS

FORMS OF VIRUS
5. WORMS
6. TROJAN HORSE
7. SPYWARE
BOOT SECTOR VIRUS

•It specifically target the boot sector by copying code multiple times
•Example: Parity Boot, Stoned Virus, Disk Killer.
•It replaces the valid contents with its own infected version.
•When the computer starts, the virus is loaded into the computer
memory.
PROGRAM FILE VIRUS
•Program file virus infects the files on the computer system.
•It resides in the root of a host file and then begins its
operation when the file is executed.
•When the file is opened, it overwrites the file.
•It can also infect files with .exe, .com, .sys file extensions.
•Example: Sunday, Cascade.
MACRO VIRUS
•It infects Microsoft Word or Microsoft applications that
provide support for Macros.
•Whenever the application runs, the virus gets activated &
damages the formatting of the document.
•Since these files are sent through mails, a computer network
can be easily infected by these viruses.
•They are relatively harmless.
•Example: Melissa, W97M.
MULTIPARTITE VIRUS

•Multipartite Virus is called a multi-part virus or hybrid virus.

•It infects computer systems multiple times and at different
times.
•It can infect both program files and boot sectors, thus
causing more damage.
•The first multipartite virus was the Ghostball virus and was
discovered in 1989 by Fridrik Skulason.
