Mr. Ron P. Agaloos
Standard Error of the Mean

It is the counterpart of the standard deviation.

It is an important statistical tool because it is a measure of the amount of
sampling error.
It is different from the other error, it can be reduced if there’s an increase
in sample size.
Mr. Ron P. Agaloos

Confidence Interval

Confidence Level
- It is the area under the curve in which we expect the population mean
to be located in
- (1-α), where alpha α is the probability that the mean is outside the
confidence interval

Note: Ways to decrease the margin of error

1) Decrease the confidence interval;
2) Increase the sample size
Mr. Ron P. Agaloos

population mean:

-using z-distribution

Z-interval estimate of population mean

Conditions when to use z-value:

1. If sample size n ≥ 30
2. Population standard deviation σ is known (given)
3. If n<30, variable should be normally distributed

Conditions
◤ when to use t-distribution:
1. If sample size n < 30
2. Population standard deviation σ is unknown (not given)
3. Variance is greater than 1
4. t-distribution is the family of curves based on the degrees of
freedom
5. If the sample size increases, the t-distribution approaches the
standard normal distribution

Confidence Interval Estimates for
◤ Population Proportion
This test is considered binomial experiment when there are two possible
outcomes and the probability of success changes.

Population Proportion (ρ)

- It is the fraction or part of the population that has a certain trait/characteristics in a
binomial experiments denoted by ρ and the value of the parameter p is unknown.

Sample Proportion (𝑝̂ )

- It is the fraction or part of the sample that contain characteristic denoted by 𝑝̂.
- The statistic 𝑝̂ is an estimate of ρ.
Mr. Ron P. Agaloos
Confidence Interval Estimates for
◤ Population Proportion

Interval Estimate
- An interval of values used to estimate a population parameter for proportion.

Confidence Level
- Most commonly used are 0.90, 0.95 and 0.99

Confidence Interval Estimates for
◤ Population Proportion
Multiplier or Standard Error of Estimate
- It is the standardized Z-score that the area between –z and +z under the standard
normal curve corresponds to the desired confidence interval.
