Using formulas and

numbers
How-to
Rearranging formulas the simple method:
(ONLY for simple formulas) A
÷
B x C
Memorise the formula triangle for each formula:

To find the formula “B=...” cover B

A
●What you see is A÷C, so B=A÷C ÷
The same with the other letters. B x C

Find the formula for:

A=...
C=... X
÷
X=... Y x Z
Y=...
Z=...

Find the formula for:

A=... BxC
C=... A÷B X
÷
X=... YxZ Y x Z
Y=... X÷Z
Z=... X÷Y
Rearranging formulas INFALLIBLE METHOD:
●Letters can move from one side of the “=” to the other by
changing operator: x exchanges with ÷
+ exchanges with -
Example1: AxB=C÷D and a question asks you to find out “B”.
You need a formula “B=...” so you need to rearrange the
formula.
A can pass to the right of the “=” but dividing instead of
multiplying: B=C÷D÷A
Example2: AxB=C÷D and a question asks you to find out
“C”. You need a formula “C=...” so you need to rearrange
the formula.
D can pass to the right of the “=” but multiplying instead of
dividing : AxBxD=C (and you can turn it round) C=AxBxD

Rearrange:
A=BxC, find C=...
A+B=C, find A=...
A+B=CxD, find C=...
AxB=C-D, find C=...

A+B=CxD, find C=... (A+B)÷D (don’t forget the
parenthesis!)
Calculation questions: “What is the density if the volume is
3m3 and the mass is 6000g?”
1.Write the list of 1.volume=3m3
information mass=6000g
. density=?
2.Make sure the units 2.Mass needs to be in kg:
are correct mass=6000g=6000÷1000=6kg
3.Write down the 3.
formula you need
(use the Mass (kg)
÷
triangle!)
Density (kg/m3) x Volume
. (m3)
. Density(kg/m3)= mass(kg) ÷
4.Substitute with volume(m3)
numbers 4.=6kg ÷ 3m3
5.Calculate the answer 5.=2
6.Put the unit of the 6.=2kg/m3
answer
