Network Media

• Links that connect nodes

• Media are what the message are transmitted over
• Divided into two parts
1. Bounded or Guided Media (having physical structure)
2. Unbounded or Unguided Media (having logical
structure)

Twisted-Pair Coaxial Fiber-Optic

Cable Cable Cable
Twisted-Pair Cabling

• Twisted-pair cable consists of multiple individually

insulated wires that are twisted together in pairs.
• Twisted-Pair comes in two forms:
• STP (Shielded twisted pair)
• UTP ( Unshielded twisted pair)
Twisted-Pair Cabling
• STP (Shielded twisted-pair):
Shielded twisted-pair cabling acts as a conducting shield by
covering the four pairs signal-carrying wires to reduce
electromagnetic interference.
• UTP ( Unshielded twisted-pair):
As the name, this cable do not have insulation (shielding)
between each of the paired wires.
OR:
Cable without outer shielding is called unshielded twisted-
pair (UTP).
• RJ45 connectors are most commonly used to connect
one internet-enabled device with another network
device.
• For example, a PC connected to a server, router,
modem, smart TV or any device utilizing Ethernet
protocol.
Wiring Standards
We have some standards to make cables in order to use them in a network.
• T568A (Standard A)
• T568B (Standard B)

Straight-Through Cable
• When we want to connect two different devices
• We use straight-through cable
• Both sides of the cable should be of same standards.

 Router - Hub
Crossover Cable
• Whenever we want to connect two same devices
• We use Crossover cable
• Both sides of the cable should be of different standards

Straight through & Crossover Devices
Note:
• Remember that:
• TP cables have 8 wires (4 pairs)
• 4 wires are used for sending and receiving data,
Remaining 4 wires are used for power
Note:
• PC and Router use:
• Wire 1,2 for (Sending data)
• Wire 3,6 for (Receiving data)
While
• Switch and Hub use:
• Wire 1,2 for (Receiving data)
• Wire 3,6 for (Sending data)
