WHAT IS A COMPUTER
HARDWARE ?
• Computer hardware is a collective term used to
describe any of the physical components of an
analog or digital computer. The
term hardware distinguishes the tangible aspects
of a computing device from software, which
consists of written, machine-readable instructions
or programs that tell physical components what to
do and when to execute the instructions.

Internal Hardware
• Internal hardware refers to the physical
components that are housed within a
computer or other electronic devices. These
components work together to perform
essential tasks like processing data, storing
information, and managing power.
Examples of internal hardware
1. Central Processing Unit (CPU): The brain of the computer, responsible for executing instructions and
processing data.
2. Motherboard: The main circuit board that connects and allows communication between all other internal
components.
3. Random Access Memory (RAM): Temporary storage used to hold data and instructions that the CPU needs
while running applications.
4. Hard Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD): Storage devices that hold the computer's operating system,
software, and files.
5. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU): A specialized processor that handles rendering images, video, and
graphics.
6. Power Supply Unit (PSU): Provides electrical power to all internal components.
7. Cooling Systems (Fans, Heat Sinks): Manage the temperature of internal components to prevent
overheating.
8. Optical Drives (if present): Used for reading and writing data on CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays.
• These internal parts work together to enable a computer or device to operate efficiently.
External Hardware
• External hardware, also known as peripherals, refers
to physical devices that are connected to a computer
or other electronic devices from the outside. These
devices enhance the computer’s capabilities or
provide input/output functions
Examples of external hardware
•Monitor: A screen that displays the graphical user interface, programs, and other visual output from
the computer.
•Keyboard: A device used to input text and commands into the computer.
•Mouse: A pointing device used to interact with the graphical interface, select items, and perform
various actions.
•Printer: A device that prints text, images, or documents onto paper.
•External Hard Drive: A portable storage device that can be connected to a computer to store and
transfer data.
•USB Flash Drive: A small, portable device used for storing and transferring files via a USB port.
•Speakers: Devices that output sound from the computer.
•Webcam: A camera used for video capture or video calls.
•Scanner: A device that converts physical documents or images into digital form.
•External Optical Drive: An external CD, DVD, or Blu-ray reader/writer that can be connected to a
computer.
Storage devices
•The storage unit is a part of the computer
system which is employed to store the
information and instructions to be processed. A
storage device is an integral part of the computer
hardware which stores information/data to
process the result of any computational work.
Without a storage device, a computer would not
be able to run or even boot up. Or in other words,
we can say that a storage device is hardware that
is used for storing, porting, or extracting data
files. It can also store information/data both
temporarily and permanently.
