BICOL

REGION - 5

GROUP 6
Region 5: BICOL
Bicol Region, officially designated as Region V, is an
administrative region in the Philippines grouped
under the Luzon island group. It covers 6 provinces,
namely, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur,
Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. The regional
center is the City of Legazpi.
The Bicol region was known as Ibalong, variously
interpreted to derive from ibalio, "to bring to the
other side"; ibalon, "people from the other side" or
"people who are hospitable and give visitors gifts
to bring home"; or as a corruption of Gibal-ong, a
sitio of Magallanes, Sorsogon where the Spaniards
first landed
• The Bicol Region is situated at the southernmost tip
of the island of Luzon. Bicol is famous among
Filipinos for its spicy food, while among travellers it's
best known for its active volcanoes and the whale
sharks of Donsol.

• It is one of the Philippines’ best-known tourist

destinations popular for its volcanoes, beaches,
caverns, coves, and other natural wonders. The
world-renowned Mayon Volcano, for instance, has
never failed to amaze both local and international
travelers with its majestic peak.
 HISTORY

The Bicol region was originally inhabited by indigenous groups like the Aga people who
practiced slash and burn agriculture. Artifacts show Bicolano culture existed before Spanish
colonization. The economy was based on agriculture and fishing. Under Spanish rule, the seat of
power was in Nueva Caceres (Naga City).

The native Bicolano people were subjugated and oppressed by the Spanish colonizers, subjected
to torture, forced labor, and loss of property and autonomy. Missionaries focused on converting
the local population to Catholicism. By the 1600s, the region was charted out into two specific
districts: Ibalon and Camarines.

Conquistador Juan de Salcedo

In 1571, the Spanish Conquistador Juan de Salcedo, grandson of Miguil Lopez de Legazpi, came to
the Bicol Region from the North. Two years later, in 1573, Juan de Salcedo led his troops in
penetrating and exploring the peninsula as far as Santiago de Libon in search for spices, gold, and
other precious stone.
