Basic of Image Editing
Image
• Image comes in a variety of formats, and
deliver context, information and emotions
that words alone struggle to convey.
• It have always used to brightens or sets
the mood of an article.
• It is also used to catch the attention of the
reader
Image Editing
• is the processes of altering, images,
whether they are digital photographs,
traditional analog photographs, or
illustrations.
Traditional Analog Image Editing
• also known as photo retouching using
tools such as an airbrush to modify
photographs, or editing illustrations with
any traditional art medium
• An airbrush is a small, air-operated tool
that sprays various media, most often
paint but also ink and dye, and foundation
by a process of nebulization. Spray
painting developed from the airbrush and
is considered to employ a type of airbrush.
Graphic Software Program

these are applications that help us

edit/manipulate images.
PRIMARY TOOLS that can be use to
manipulate images.
• Vector graphics editors
• Raster graphics editors
• 3D modelers
Vector Grapics Editor
• a computer program that allows users to
compose and edit vector graphics images
interactively on a computer and save them
in one of many popular vector graphics
formats, such as EPS, PDF, WMF, SVG,
or VML.
• Vector= shapes(without resolution)/
Illustrator
Raster Graphics Editor
• a computer program that allows users to
create and edit images interactively on the
computer screen and save them in one of
many "bitmap" or "raster" formats such as
JPEG, PNG, GIF.
• bitmap is a type of memory organization
or image file format used to store digital
images. (map of bits)
• Raster= pixels(with resolution)/ Photoshop
3D Modelers
• three-dimensional computer graphics (in
contrast to 2D computer graphics), are
graphics that use a three-dimensional
representation of geometric data (often
Cartesian) that is stored in the computer
for the purposes of performing calculations
and rendering 2D images.
Vector Image VS Raster Image
• Vector uses a combination of primitive
shapes like circles, lines, and curves in
order to create the final image. In contrast,
raster uses a grid with each element in the
grid having its own color.
• Raster= pixels(with resolution)/ Photoshop
• Vector= shapes(without resolution)/

Photo Editing Tools
Cropping/ Crop
• the process of cutting out distracting
background or irrelevant object around the
subject.
• Rule of thirds the golden rule of
photography which means mentally
dividing up your image using 2 horizontal
lines and 2 vertical lines. You then position
the important elements in your scene
along those lines, or at the points where
they meet.
Resizing and Compression
• resize and compress an image to its
optimum size for the use you intend it for.
• it is important to resize your image
depending on where or how you will use it.
will it be for print, or will it be for display(for
webpage or for regular screen).
• size refers to the actul height and width
that your image will be displayed.
Resolution
• refers to the number of dots per inch (dpi) that appear in
your images final form.
– for print: dots
– for screen: pixels.
• a printed image with high resolution will look very smooth
and will show vistually no pixilation.
– the higher the resolution for printed images the better
the image will be
• an image with low resolution projected in screen may
look far more pixelated.
– layout resolution is best for screen because monitors
can only handle so much
Correcting
• the process of changing the color rendition
because of the inconsistency between
light and the white balance
Sharpening or softening
• the last of the global corrections that are
often applied to digital images.
• this is usually use to eliminate unwanted
effects such as slightly blurry captured
images.
– pixel sharpening - applied to the pixels with
processes such as unsharp masking
– edge sharpening is applied only to the pixels
that the software can identify as being on an
edge.
• over sharpening increases the contrast
and often distorts color relationships
Raster and Vector Image

Raster
• images stored in a computer in the form of
grid of picture elements or pixels.
• Pixels contain the image color and
brightness information.
Raster and Vector Image
• vector graphics software, such as Adobe
Illustrator, Corel Draw, Xara Designer Pro
or Inkscape are used to create and modify
vector images, which are stores as
descriptions of lines and text instead of
pixels.
• it is easier to rasterize a vector image than
to vectorize a raster image.
• vector image are scalable and rasterize in
any resolution
Automatic Image Enhancement
• most of gadgets nowadays contain this
feature that automatically enchance or
correct the color hue and the brightness
imbalances of an image as well as other
image editing like red eye removal,
sharpness adjustments, zoom features
and automatic cropping.
Digital Data Compression
• applications the reduce file size and save
storage space.
• this can take place in the camera, or can be
done in the computer with the image editor
• When images are stored in JPEG Joint
Photographic Experts Group format,
compression has already taken place. “it uses
lossy compression algorithm by which the
greater the compression, the more information is
lost”
• PNG Portable Network Graphics - no information
is lost when the file is saved.
Photoshop Document
• .psd file is the file format in which
Photoshop saves images by default.
• it is a multi-layer document that retains its
full editing options when saved.
Layers
• it is a single transparent sheets which hold
particular pieces of an image.
• it can contain images, text and shapes
• layers are controlled with the use of the
Layers pane.
Selections
• refer to regions in an image that will be
affected by the various tools.
• once you have selected an area, you can
apply a tool to it, such as paintbrush,
paintbucket, or perform an operation such
as copy, cut or delete
• selections can be any shapes and size
• selection will only apply to the current
active layer
Image Size
• it deals with the actual number of pixels
tall and wide an image is.
Color Mode
• refers to the types of colors you will be
using in your image.
• CMYK- is the setting for images that will
be printed to paper. The letters refer to the
four channels of color used to create every
color available: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow
and black
• RGB refers to the three channel color
mode suitable for images to be viewed on
the web: Red, Green and Blue
Screen Resolution
• Screen resolution is close to 72 pixels per inch.
• Graphics to be viewd only on screen, 72 should
be fine.
• the standard resolution for printing is 150.
• a typical monitor is set to display somewhere
around 800x600 pixels.
• the higher resolution set to a monitor is
somewhere around 1024x768 pixels
• 72 dpi is the standard for world wide web (www)
• to be safe, never publish an image that is 800
pixels wide and 600 pixels high
Layering
• the process of grouping layers
• you can merge down layers to consolidate
them
• flatten image to force the entire contents of
the image onto one layer

Different Tools in Adobe Photoshop
TOOLS USED FOR CREATING GRAPHICS
• FOREGROUND/BACKGROUND COLORS
– Photoshop uses the foreground color to paint, fill,
and stroke selections and the background color to
make gradient fills and fill in the erased areas of an
image.
• COLOR PICKER
– This is where you can pick a color with several
different methods, including RGB values,
Hexadecimal codes and by simply selection.
• STROKE AND FILL
– these tools can be found on the edit menu.
– A fill is a color, pattern, or gradient inside an object.
– A stroke can be the visible outline of an object, a
path, or the edge
• PAINT BRUSH
– an element of the painting tool that allows you to
select a brush shape (square, circle, oval and so on)
and also the the thickness in pixels you want to paint
on your image with. As you move your cursor over the
image it leaves a stroke of color.
• PENCIL TOOL
– The Pencil and Brush tools in Photoshop CS6 are
very much alike, except that the Pencil tool has hard
edges by default and the Brush tool can have soft,
feathered edges.
• ERASER TOOL
– a brush which erases pixels as you drag it across the
image. Pixels are erased to transparency, or the
background colour if the layer is locked.
• ERASER TOOL
– BACKGROUND ERASER TOOL- allows you
to remove the background colour from an
image or layer.
– MAGIC ERASER TOOL- erases all colours
within a set tolerance. This is essentially the
same as using the magic wand and hitting
Delete. Using this tool you don't need to drag
— just click once.
