TOPIC-
IRRIGATION
WATER
Water is one of the most vital natural
resources required for the crop
production. India, has the vast surface
water resources owing to the presence of
12 major river basins and 8 composite
riverbanks.
Most of the agricultural land in India is
rain-fed and rain-fed agriculture accounts
What is Irrigation ?
The process of timely water supply
to crops in the field by the means
of canals, wells, reservoirs, river lift
systems, or other water resources,
is called Irrigation.
Advantages of Irrigation
Irrigation ensures regular supply of
moisture, essential for the
germination of seeds and growth of
plants.
Silt carried through irrigation channel
enhances fertility of soil.
Multipurpose dams also help control
flood, improved navigation of rivers and
Sources of Irrigation
Our country has a wide variety of
water resources and climatic
conditions. In such situations,
several kinds of irrigation systems
are adopted to bring more and
more agricultural land under
wells
A well is the source of underground water.
The rainwater gets absorbed into the
ground. This groundwater can be utilised
by digging wells. These are of two types:-
Dug wells
Tube wells
DUG WELLS
These are open wells that are
build to a depth just below the
water table. These are shallow
and water can be drawn
manually or by devices operated
TUBE WELLS
The tube wells or Bore wells can draw
water from deep strata. Water from
tube wells is pumped up with the help
of diesel or electric pumps. Deep bore
wells can supply large quantity of
water and do not dry fast.
CANAL SYSTEM
The canals receive water from rivers or water
reservoirs. The main canal is divided into branch
canals, and branch canals further have
distributaries or channels that supply water to the
fields. River or water source, main canal branch
canals and distributaries together form a canal
system. In canal irrigated areas, a rotation system
is followed so as to provide adequate water to all
fields when the supply of water is insufficient.
River lift system
This system of irrigation is helpful when
canal system cannot supply sufficient
water due to inadequate water supply
from reservoirs. In such situations, water
is directly drawn from rivers and used
for irrigation, but only in regions near
the river.
Tanks
These are small storage reservoirs that
store and control the overflow of smaller
catchment areas. Small dams are built
below the higher elevation of the
catchment area to store runoff water.
From these tanks, water for irrigation is
distributed.
Drip Irrigation
In this system water is
supplied drop by drop near
the roots. It is a good method
of irrigation in water deficient
areas.
Sprinkler
In this irrigation method,
irrigation
sprinklers or overhead pipes are
used to spray water over the
crops. This is also a good method
of irrigation in water deficient
areas and areas having uneven
