WHAT IS EMPLOYEE
MENTAL HEALTH?

Mental health in the workplace largely contributes

organizations key resource. Staff health
and well being should always be
promoted.
The Working Environment must be safe
and healthy. Employees health and
welfare must be protected through
workplace policies.
The Organizational Structure can affect
morale and how employees feel about
their work. Management style,
communication systems and training all
COMMON MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN
THE WORKPLACE
 Stress
Can result when there is an imbalance
between the demands made to
employees and the resources they have
available to cope with those demands.
Factors in work related stress include :
lack of support from colleagues and
management, abusive behaviors,
gossiping, sexist/racist comments and
intruding on interpersonal space.
Burnout
A state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion
caused by excessive and prolonged stress.
Happens when people who have previously been highly
committed to a job lose all interest and motivation.
Causes :
• Working excessively without time for relaxation or
socializing
• Taking on too many responsibilities without enough help
from others
• Not getting enough sleep
• Working in a chaotic or high-pressure environment
Depression
Employees are likely to experience
depression symptoms while working.
Working long hours, stress on the job and
heavy workload may all contribute to
depression. This also affects productivity
and work performance.
Anxiety
Social anxiety : interpersonal struggles
General anxiety : worry about future at
company, stress over deadlines or tasks
Some other psychosocial risks related to the work environment include :
• Poor environmental conditions : employee exposure to hazardous or
unpleasant environments, loud noise, high temperatures
• Low role clarity : being unclear about job tasks and work standards
• Violent or traumatic events : employee exposure to e.g. robbery, assault
or physical injury
• Long working hours : can result in negative mood, stress, poor health
• Conflict : poor workplace relationships can lead to conflict which can
disrupt team performance and impact psychological health of employees
