NUMBER SYSTEM
A number system is defined as a system of writing to express numbers. It is the
mathematical notation for representing numbers of a given set by using digits or
other symbols in a consistent manner. It provides a unique representation of every
number and represents the arithmetic and algebraic structure of the figures. It
also allows us to operate arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction and
division.
Components of number system
Real numbers- All the rational & irrational numbers are called real numbers.
Real numbers are denoted by r.
e.g.- 0, 2, −1, 3.6, 5/6, 8.567567……., π(3.1415……), etc

Rational numbers - The numbers that can be written in the form of

p/q, are called Rational Numbers. Where p and q are integers and
q ≠ 0. Rational numbers are denoted by Q.
Examples – 1/2, 3/5, −7/2, 1/−3, etc.
NATURAL NUMBERS - All the counting numbers starting from 1 are called
NATURAL numbers. Natural numbers are denoted by N.
Examples - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6………∞ (infinity).
Whole numbers – All the counting numbers starting from 0 are called whole
numbers. Whole numbers are denoted by W.
E.g.- 0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6………∞ (infinity).
Integers – All the positive & negative numbers including 0 are called integers.Integers are
denoted by Z.
Examples – −∞………..−4, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4………..∞.

Positive integers - Integers that are on the right side of 0 on a number line are called
positive integers. The value of these integers is greater than 0.
Examples – 1,2,6,1000,2072,etc.

Negative integers - Integers that are on the left side of 0 on a number line are called
negative integers. The value of these integers is less than 0.
Examples - _ -1,-4,-122,-1345,etc.

Fractions - In Mathematics, fractions are defined as the parts of a whole. The whole can
be an object or a group of objects. . It is denoted by using ‘/’ symbol, such as a/b. For
example, in 2/4 is a fraction where the upper part (2) denotes the numerator and the
lower part (4) is the denominator.
Examples – 3/4, 5/7, 8,9, etc.
