COMPUTER SYSTEM

SERVICING
AREA: LAN CABLING
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)
is a computer network that interconnects
computers within a limited area such as a
home, school, computer laboratory, or
specific building using network media.

Using the network we can use peripheral

connected to one computer such as
Printers to printer files or documents from
the other computers.
COMPUTER GAMERS
 Dota is an example of LAN
games
 Computers within a room
are interconnected
 Gamers can have a real
time interaction, not just
fighting in the game but
they can also communicate
through chat
TRY TO IMAGINE:

Computers in a faculty room

with one printer.
Computers in a BPO company
which uses server to switch
networking device.
Registrar office send documents
to HR office without even using
internet connection.

about our topic that will be
answered after the
discussion?
OBJECTIVES:
1) Enumerate the tools and
materials used in LAN Cabling.
2) Identify the color coding of
wires used in straight through
LAN cable.
3) Perform a straight through LAN
cabling.
4) Value the importance of
following safety precaution
while working.
LAN Cabling
the process of
creating cable
that will be used
in creating a
network between
computers,
routers, switches
and storage area
network.
HUB
- used as the central objects on which
computers and other devices are
connected
PIN
– piece of metal
used to fasten
two things
together
T568B STRAIGHT THROUGH

– is used to
connect computer
to a network
device such as
router.

Use a straight-through cable
when:
1.Connecting a router to hub.
2.Connecting a computer to a
switch.
3.Connecting LAN port to a
switch, hub or computer.
SAFETY PRECAUTION:

1.Avoid horse playing.

2.Use the proper tool.
3.Always be on task.
4.Be vigilant.
MATERIALS AND
TOOLS USED IN
LAN CABLING
UTP Cat5e CABLE
(Unshielded Twisted Pair Category 5
enhanced)
– is used as a cabling
infrastructures for
Ethernet. The most
common cable used in
computer networking.
Number of twisted-pair
wire are often grouped
together and enclosed
in a protective sheath
to form a cable.
CRIMPING TOOL / CRIMPER
A device used to
conjoin two pieces
of metal by
deforming one or
both of them in a
way that causes
them to hold each
other. Used to crimp
UTP cable to RJ45
connector.
RJ45 (Registered Jack 45)

– is a standard type of
connector for
Ethernet network
cable. It is an eight-
wire connector used
to connect computers
to category 5
unshielded twisted
pair cables in a
network.
CABLE STRIPPER

– use to remove
the outer
jacket of the
wire.
LAN TESTER (Local Area
Tester)
- is an electronic
device used to
verify the
electrical
connections in a
cable or other
wired.
- is used to test if
your LAN cable is
working.
STEPS IN LAN CABLING:
1.Prepare all the materials needed.
2.Get the needed length of the cable
and add a little extra wire, just in
case.
3.Carefully remove the outer jacket
of the cable.
4.Untwist the pairs and arrange the
wires based on straight-through
wiring.
5.Trim the untwisted wires to a
suitable length.
6.Keep the wires flat and in order
as you push them into the RJ45.
7.Place the wired plug into the
crimping tool.
8. Repeat all the steps with the
other end of the cable
9.Test the cable using the LAN
Tester.
GROUP ACTIVITY
Each group will create a T568B or Straight-
Through LAN cable by following the steps
in crimping a LAN cable for 15minutes.

Each group will be provided UTP cable,

RJ45 and Crimping tool.

While one group member is performing,

the other group members are allowed to
guide their groupmate.

Your output will be checked using LAN

tester.

GENERALIZATION:

LAN Cabling is the process of creating

a LAN cable which is used in
interconnecting computers. The T568
or Straight Through LAN cable is used
to connect many computers with the
use of HUB. There are several tools
and materials used in LAN Cabling
like UTP Cable, wire stripper, crimping
tool and LAN tester or cable tester.
ASSIGNMENT:
A. Follow-up Assignment:
1. What is Cross-over LAN cable?

2. What is color coding of Cross-Over

LAN cable?

B. Advance Assignment:
1.What are the structured Cabling
Systems?

2. Identify and describe the elements

that are recommended for
structured cabling networks.
