 "Can" is a modal verb used to express:

- Ability: What someone is able to do.


- Permission: Asking for or giving consent.
- Possibility: Something that might
happen.
CAN IS OFTEN USED IN INFORMAL CONTEXTS.

It’s important to remember that while “can” expresses ability, “may” or


“might” are often used for formal permission or possibility.

Practice Sentences:

Try forming your own sentences using "can“

1. Write an affirmative sentence about something you can do.


2. Write a negative sentence about something you can’t do.
3. Ask a question using "can.“
2. Structure:
The structure of sentences using "can" is quite simple. Here’s how it
works:
Affirmative Form:
- Subject + can + base form of the verb
- Example: "She can speak three languages.

Negative Form:
- Subject + cannot (or can’t) + base form of the verb - Example: "He
cannot (can’t) play the piano.

Interrogative Form (Questions):


- - Can + subject + base form of the verb - Example: "Can you help
me with this?
ABILITY:
AFFIRMATIVE: "I can swim." (I have the ability to swim.)
NEGATIVE: "They can’t run fast." (They do not have the ability to
run fast.)
INTERROGATIVE: "Can she dance?" (Does she have the ability to
dance?).

PERMISSION:
Affirmative: "You can use my phone." (I give you permission to
use my phone.)
Negative: "You can’t leave early." (I do not give you permission
to leave early.)- Interrogative: "Can I go out tonight?" (Am I
allowed to go out tonight?)

POSSIBILITY:
AFFIRMATIVE: "It can rain tomorrow." (There is a possibility that
it will rain tomorrow.)
