What is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage is a service that stores data on the internet through a cloud computing provider that
manages and operates data storage as a service.

How does the cloud work?


Setup data center and servers. Access data through web interfaces, desktop applications, or APIs.

Storage Formats and Service Categories


➔ Objects: Each piece of data is an object with a unique identifier. Object Storage
➔ File: Data is organized in hierarchical format with files and folders. File Storage
➔ Block: Each piece of data is broken down into blocks with unique identifiers. Block Storage
➔ Hybrid Storage

Amazon Simple Storage Service(s3), Simple Storage Service Glacier (S3 Glacier), Amazon File

Benefits?
➔ Edge computing processes data closer to the location where it is generated over sending to
centralized data centers. E.g Snow Family(Snowcone, snowball edge, snowmobile). Benefits?
1. Amazon S3 (Simple Storage
Service)
Object storage service that offers industry-leading scalability, data availability,
security, and performance.

➔ UseCases
Backup and storage, application hosting, media hosting, software delivery

➔ Key Features
Storage classes: s3 standards, S3 Intelligent-Tiering

Storage Management: S3 Lifecycle, S3 Object Lock(WORM), S3 Replication,


S3 Batch Operations

Access Management and Security: S3 Block Public Access, IAM, Bucket


policies, Access control policies, and integration with IAMs

Data processing: S3 Object Lambda, Event notifications


2. Amazon EBS (Elastic Block Store)
Block storage service designed for use with Amazon EC2 instances. It provides persistent
storage that remains even after the instance is terminated.

➔ UseCases
Build mission critical, I/O intensive apps, Run Relational or NoSQL databases,
right-size your big data analytics engines.

➔ Key Features
Volumes: General Purpose SSD(1GiB-16TiB) (gp2, gp3), Provisioned IOPS SSD(4GiB
- 16TiB) (io1, io2), Throughput Optimized HDD (st1), and Cold HDD (sc1).

Data Protection: EBS Snapshots, Lifecycle Manager for EBS Snapshots, EBS
encryption, and AWS IAM.

Key Capabilities: EBS Elastic Volumes (with Cloudwatch & Lambda), EBS Multi-
Attach (Attach a single EBS provisioned volume to multiple Nitro-based EC2 instances
simultaneously), EBS Torn Write prevention(turn off double write operations for
increased db write throughput)
3. Amazon EFS (Elastic File
System)
Provides serverless, fully elastic file storage

Simplify devops, modernize application development, accelerate data
science, enhance CMS

➔ Key Features
Storage Management: Fully managed, highly available and durable

Performance and Scale: Fully elastic and highly scalable, throughput modes(scalable
based on workload).

Cost optimization: Storage classes( EFS standard, EFS Infrequent, EFS Archive),
Lifecycle management and Intelligence-Tiering.

Data Protection and Security: EFS Replication, Backup, Security & Compliance,
Encryption

Data transfer: AWS DataSync (between on-premise & EFS), AWS Transfer Family (fully
managed file transfers, secure)
4. Amazon FSx (File Server)
Fully managed
features service for launching and running file systems with various

5. AWS Storage Gateway
