INTRODUCTION

 An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is an electronic device that maintains a constant

voltage level to electrical equipment on the same load.

 In today's power distribution systems, voltage fluctuations caused by increasing demand,

aging infrastructure, and the integration of renewable energy sources pose significant
challenges to maintaining a stable and reliable power supply.

 They automatically adjust the voltage output based on real-time monitoring and control
mechanisms

Automatic Voltage Regulator

 An Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is an electrical device

that automatically maintains a constant voltage level in electrical
systems.

 AVRs are commonly used in generators, power distribution

systems, and industrial equipment.
Working Principle of AVR

 Detection of errors

 The output voltage is rectified,

Filtered

 Error voltage

 Overshooting the mark principle

Types Of AVR

 On-Load Tap Changer

(OLTC)
 Single-Phase Matrix
Converter (SPMC) AVR
1. On-Load Tap Changer(OLTC)
 An on-load tap changer (OLTC) adjusts voltage ratios in
transformers while under load

 The device maintains stable output voltage amid

varying load conditions.

 It is commonly used in high-voltage and distribution

transformers.
Working of OLTC
 Voltage Monitoring

 Comparison With Set Point

 Error Detection

 Control Signal Generation

 Tap Position Adjustment

 Switching Mechanism
2. Single-Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC)

The (SPMC) is a type of power electronic device that directly

converts a single-phase AC input to a different single-phase AC output,
without the need for an intermediate DC stage (link)

A recent technology known as single phase matrix converter is

capable of performing all these conversions. The use of a matrix
converter in the future reduces the need for learning many varying
converter topologies
 Reactive Power Management

 Output Waveform Generation

 Matrix Configuration Input

 AC Voltage Source

 Four Bi-directional Switches

CONCLUSION
The performance investigation concluded that the AVR
effectively maintained voltage stability within acceptable limits, but
there is room for optimization in specific areas.
Recommendations for design improvement include implementing
faster response times, increasing regulation accuracy, and enhancing
robustness against electrical noise and temperature fluctuations.
