Safety in the workshop

- Almost everyone working in a workshop

has at some stage in his or her career
suffered an injury requiring some kind of treatment
or first aid.
- The cause may have been carelessness by the
victim or a colleague, defective safety
equipment, not using the safety equipment
provided or inadequate protective clothing.

-Whatever the explanation given for the

accident, the true cause was most likely a
failure to think ahead. You must learn to
work safely
ACCIDENTS AND THEIR TYPES

1. Near Accident
An accident with no damage or injury is called near
accident.
2. Trivial
An accident with very less damage is called trivial.
3. Minor Accident
It is an accident with damage and injury more than trivial.
4. Serious Accident
An accident with heavy damage and lot of injury is called
serious accident.
5. Fatal
It is an accident with very heavy damage. There may be
loss of lives also.
Effect of
Acciden
ts 1- Effect on the owner of
factory

Direct cost of an accident:

1-Cost of the compensation paid to the workers.

2-Cost of the money paid for treatment .

3. Cost of the monetary value of damaged tools,

equipments and materials .
Indirect cost of an accident:

1-Cost of the lost time of injured worker .

2-Cost of the time lost by other employees .
3- Cost of the delays in production .
4-Cost of the time lost by
supervisors, safety engineers
etc.
5-cost of the lowered production due to
substitute worker.
2-Effect on worker

1- The industrial workers may get temporary or

permanent disability.
2- If the industrial worker dies, his family loses the
earner and the compensation never equals to his
earnings.
3- Accident also affects the morale of the
employees working in the manufacturing
environment.
3-Effect on society

1 - Cost of accidents is included in the products, so the

society has to pay more prices for the
industrial products.
2- If some industrial workers do not come under
compensation act, the need for help from society is

much greater.
3 - Loss of production hours may causes fewer products in
market. So more prices if demand is more than
production
Mechanica
l Causes
Human
Causes
.
1-Accidents may occur while working on unsafe
equipments or machineries possessing rotating and
moving parts

2- Accidents occur while operating machines without

knowledge,without safety precautions, without safety
devices.
3-Accidents may occur while working for long duration
of work

4-Accidents commonly occur during use of improper

tools .
Environmental
Causes
1.Accidents may occur during working at improper
temperature and humidity causes fatigue to the
workers.
2.The presence of dust fumes and smoke in the
working area may causes accidents.
3.Improper ventilation in the plant may also leads to
industrial accidents.
Mechanical Causes

1.Continued use of old, poor maintained or unsafe

equipment may result in accidents.

3. unsafe design and unsafe construction

ofbuilding structure may lead to accidents in
the plant.

4-Accidents may occur due to not using of safety

devices such as helmets, goggles, gloves, masks etc.
Safety Methods

1. Personal Protective Equipment

(PPE)

* Safety Glasses/Goggles: Always

wear eye protection to guard against
flying debris, dust, or chemicals.

* Hearing Protection: For noisy

machinery, such as power tools
and saws, use earplugs or
earmuffs to protect your hearing
* Dust Mask : When working with materials
that produce fine dust (e.g., wood, metal, or
chemicals), use a dust mask to protect your
lungs.

* Steel-toe Boots: To protect your feet from

heavy objects or sharp tools, wear safety boots
with steel toes.
Safety
Methods
Gloves: Wear appropriate gloves to
protect your hands from sharp objects, hot
surfaces, or hazardous materials.
However, avoid wearing loose gloves
when operating machinery, as they can
get caught in moving parts
2. Tool Safety
Inspect Tools Before Use: Always check
your tools for any signs of wear or
damage before use.
Use the Right Tool for the Job: Using a
tool inappropriately can lead to accidents.
Keep Tools Clean and Sharp: Dull tools can
be more dangerous than sharp ones
Power Tools: Ensure that power tools are
grounded and that all safety features (like
safety switches ) are in place before use.
Disconnect Power: Always disconnect or
turn off power tools when changing
accessories or making adjustments .
3. Workshop Layout and Organization

Clear Walkways
Proper Storage
Lighting
Ventilation
4. Handling Materials and Equipment
 Lifting
Techniques: Use proper lifting techniques
(bend your knees, not your back) when handling
heavy items.

 Chemical Safety: Always read and follow the

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any
chemicals used in the workshop. Store chemicals
properly,, and wear appropriate PPE

 Electrical
Safety: Keep electrical cords and plugs
dry and avoid using them near water
5. Fire SafetyFire Extinguisher
 Always have a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure
it's easily accessible. Learn how to use it and check
its condition regularly.

 Flammable Materials: Keep flammable materials,

away from heat sources.

 No Smoking: Enforce a no-smoking policy in the

workshop, particularly if you’re working with
flammable materials or gases.
6. Machine SafetyRead Instructions
 Always read the manual for machinery and follow
all instructions, including safety warnings.

 Safety Guards: Ensure that safety guards and

shields are in place on all machines and tools.

 Turn Off Machines When Not in Use: Never leave

machines running when you're not actively using
them.
 Two-Hand Operation: For machines that require
both hands, make sure both hands are free and
placed properly before turning the machine on.
7. Emergency PreparednessFirst Aid
Kit:
Have a well-stocked first aid kit
available and ensure all workers know
its location.
 Make sure someone is trained in basic
first aid and CPR.
Emergency Shutoff: Familiarize
yourself with emergency shutoff
switches for power tools and
equipment.
Fire Exits: Ensure fire exits are clearly
marked . Have an evacuation plan in
place and conduct regular safety drills.
