Understanding “Peer Reviewed”
◦ Peer-reviewed articles may also be called “scholarly articles,” “academic articles,” or “refereed articles.”
They are articles that have been reviewed by peers or experts in the author’s field of research/study.

Some clues that an article is peer-reviewed:

It's long. Generally peer-reviewed articles are at least 10 pages long
It references other research articles and contains extensive footnotes/endnotes
It doesn't have glossy pictures or advertisements
It contains additional author information, such as the author's contact information and
scholarly credentials
It is published by an academic publisher or academic/professional association
Once you know your topic or research thesis:
take the time to brainstorm your topic.
◦ Your Topic:

Respect and Love for Elders OR Children?

TIP: Break down your topic into individual concepts
Keywords: respect, love and elders, children.
Brainstorm different words to describe each concept (synonyms, related terms, broader or
narrower terms)
respect = admiration,(admire), esteem, regard highly, value
elders = senior, seniors, veteran, patriarch, ancestors
Tips for better Search Results
Narrow or broaden search results, using Boolean searches. Boolean searching is a method of using
search tools called operators that modify search results using keywords to broaden and narrow
search results.
The operators are:
AND, which combines words together to narrow a search
OR, which searches for one term or another to broaden a search
NOT, which excludes words from a search to narrow it
The modifiers are:
an asterisk *, which is placed at the end of a word stem and pulls results with the same stem and
different endings to broaden a search eg. Child* = children, childhood, etc.
quotation marks " ", which will return the exact word or phrase searched with no variants
