Vision and
Mission of
IGBC
The organization’s influence has grown, particularly in
sectors like residential housing, office buildings, and
institutional campuses, which are increasingly adopting eco-
friendly designs. As of 2023, IGBC aims to support India’s
target of reducing emissions intensity by 45% by 2030, under
the Paris Agreement.

Its formation was driven by a growing global awareness of sustainable
development, especially after the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which focused

History of IGBC on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. IGBC’s efforts initially started
with the development of India’s first green building in Hyderabad, which
was certified as LEED Platinum in 2003. Today, IGBC operates in
collaboration with several international green building councils, including
the US Green Building Council (USGBC)

The IGBC steering committee includes prominent industry leaders, government officials, and academics. Some of the key members
include:

•Dr. Prem Jain (Former Chairman of IGBC)

•Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora (Co-Chairman of IGBC)
Mr. V Suresh (Chairman of IGBC)
Membership has grown to over 5,500, including major corporations like Tata Housing, Godrej Properties, and Infosys, which play an
active role in furthering sustainable building practices in India.
Professional
Development
IGBC conducts a wide range of professional development activities,
including specialized workshops on topics such as energy efficiency,
renewable energy integration, and green building materials. These
workshops often feature case studies from prominent green buildings in
India, such as the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad,
which is one of India’s first Platinum-rated buildings under LEED. IGBC also
collaborates with organizations like the USGBC to facilitate knowledge
sharing between India and international stakeholders.

•Green Building Congress: This is IGBC's flagship event, held annually

since 2001, bringing together over 10,000 participants from 50+ countries
in recent years, promoting global best practices in sustainable construction.
Standards published
IGBC has developed several green building rating systems tailored to different
types of buildings:

•IGBC Green Homes: The most widely adopted residential green building
rating system, promoting water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste
management.
•IGBC Green Factories: A certification program that focuses on reducing
industrial energy consumption and improving worker well-being.

As of 2023, IGBC has certified over 7,500 projects across India, covering more
than 9 billion sq. ft. of green building space.

Research and IGBC has partnered with several prestigious academic institutions, including
the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses in Delhi, Mumbai, and
Madras, as well as the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in New

Academic
Delhi. These collaborations focus on research into sustainable materials,
renewable energy systems, and low-carbon building technologies. IGBC also
works closely with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru on
research related to green construction materials like fly ash, recycled

collaboration concrete, and eco-friendly insulation.

IGBC regularly publishes technical manuals, research papers, and best

Publications practice case studies. One of their notable publications is the "Green
Building Rating Systems Manual," which provides guidelines for achieving
certification under the IGBC Green Homes, Factories, and Township ratings.
IGBC also shares its knowledge through its quarterly Green Building
Newsletter, which reaches over 10,000 professionals.

Certification The green building certifications offered by IGBC cover a wide range of
sectors, with Platinum being the highest certification level:

s offered by •Certified: Basic green standards achieved.

•Silver: Exceeds basic standards.

IGBC •Gold: High sustainability achievements.

•Platinum: The highest level of green building certification.

As of 2023, over 7,500 buildings across India have received one of these
certifications. In addition, the IGBC Accredited Professional (AP)
credential is awarded to individuals who demonstrate expertise in green
building principles.
IGBC offers comprehensive training programs for industry

Training professionals, including architects, engineers,

developers. These programs cover the fundamentals of green

material usage. As of 2023, IGBC has trained over 15,000
professionals through both in-person and online programs.

projects.

Organization •L&T Construction: Plays a key role in promoting

infrastructure projects.
Presence and Events
In addition to the annual Green Building Congress, IGBC organizes regional events and
webinars to promote knowledge sharing. These events focus on emerging trends like
renewable energy integration, smart cities, and sustainable urban planning. They also
feature international speakers, allowing Indian professionals to learn from global best
practices.

1IGBC’s presence extends across 26 states, with notable regional chapters in Bengaluru,
Mumbai, and Delhi. These chapters are actively engaged in promoting green building
standards at the state level. IGBC also works with local governments to encourage the
adoption of green building incentives, such as reduced property taxes and expedited
building permits for certified projects.

Despite its growth, IGBC faces challenges in expanding green building practices beyond

Limitations urban centers. Many developers in smaller towns and rural areas perceive the upfront costs
of green construction as too high, despite long-term savings. Additionally, there is a need for
increased government incentives to make green building more accessible across all regions
of India.
IGBC has made significant strides in expanding its influence beyond commercial buildings to include infrastructure projects. For
example, the Hyderabad Metro Rail is certified under the IGBC Green Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Rating, making it one
of the most sustainable public transportation systems in India.
