VOCABULARY: Study these words and clearly pronounce them

need to refer to the Japanese half.
JONES:

SATO:
Hikari wa san-jikan desu. For the Hikari, it is 3 hours .
Kodama wa yo-jikan desu. For the Kodama, it is 4 hours.
JONES:
Osaka-jo wa eki kara chikai Is the Osaka Castle near from
desuka? the station?
SATO:
Hai, chikai desu. Takushii de2 Yes, it’s near. It is about 15
ju-go-fun gurai3 desu. minutes by taxi.
POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. NOUN + kara: from NOUN
Kara is used to indicate a starting point in place and time.
Example: Tokyo kara san-jikan desu. (From Tokyo it’ s 3 hours)
Kaisha wa ku-ji kara desu. (The company is from 9:00)
Kaigi wa gozen hachi-ji kara ku-ji made desu. (The conference will be
from 8:00 A.M. to 9:00.)

2. NOUN + de: by means of/in/with NOUN


De is used to indicate an instrument or means.
Example: Takushii de ju-go-fum gurai desu. (It’s about 15 minutes by
taxi)
De has another function which will be discussed in Lesson 13.
3. NUMBER + gurai
Gurai is added to a number to indicate approximate quantity.
Ju-go-fun gurai desu. (It’s about 15 minutes)

A. Practice saying the following sentence in Japanese. Repeat
the exercises until you no longer need to refer to the Japanese
half.
