 Drug abuse happens when people use drug in a way that is
harmful or dangerous. This includes using illegal drugs
misusing prescription medication, or taking over the
counter drugs incorrectly. When people abuse drugs, it can
cause serious problems in health, relationships and
everyday life.

Types of drug
 Stimulants: Stimulants increase activity in the brain or
nervous system. They can make a person more awake,
energetic and focused.
Eg.- Caffeine: Tea, coffee and energy drink.
Nicotine: Tobacco products.
 Depressants: Depressants slow down the brain and nervous

system, which can make people relaxed and sleepy.


Eg.- Alcohol, Benzodiazepines and barbiturates.
 Narcotics: Narcotics are powerful drugs that relieve pain

but can also create feelings of euphoria. They are highly


addictive.
Eg.- Prescription Opioids: Morphine, Oxycodone,
Hydrocodone.
Heroin: Derived from morphine.

Cannabis: Cannabis, or marijuana, can have effect similar
to both stimulants and depressants. It make people relaxed
and happy or increase appetite.
Eg.- Marijuana and Hashish.
Causes of drug
Drug abuse is a serious issue affecting individuals and
societal worldwide, understanding the case of drug abuse can
help in finding effective solution to prevent and address it.

to Drug Abuse in India
 Drug laws in India governed by the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. These laws have
a great impact on Indian society. These laws aim to control
the production, distribution and consumption of drugs as well
as reducing drug abuse and its harmful effect on society.
 The strict penalties under the NDPS Act, including long prison
and heavy fines helped in reducing the crime rate associated
with drugs, such as theft, violence, and organized crime.
 The laws help to prevent the misuse of prescription of drugs.
This reduce the risk of addiction and health problems in the
general population.
 Because of these acts peoples life is improving. The educated
people takes part in drug abuse campaigns.
Conclusion
Drug abuse is a serious issue that affects many aspects of
society, from health to crime. In India, efforts to control and
reduce drug abuse include law like Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Act and ruling by Supreme Court
that push for better treatment and support systems. While
these measures are important, ongoing efforts are needed to
improve prevention treatment, and law enforcement to
effectively tackle drug abuse and support affected
individuals.
