Intranet

Introduction
An intranet is owned by a single
organization and is a tool for sharing
information throughout the organization.
It is the type of Internet that is used
privately. Since the intranet is a private
network no one can use the intranet
whose have not valid username and
password. In intranet, there are a limited
number of connected devices as
compared to the internet. The intranet is
highly secure and also used to protect
your data and provide data security to a 3

particular organization, as it is a private

Intranet
Here in this diagram, a company has created
its private network or intranet for its work.
The company has many employees. So, for
their access, they have PC-1, PC-2, and PC-3.
Also, they have their server for data to store,
and to protect this private network, there is a
Firewall. This firewall protects and gives
security to the intranet server and its data
from getting leaked to any unwanted user.
So, a user who has access to the intranet can
only access this network. So, no one from the
outside world can access this network. Also,
an intranet user can access the internet but a
person using the internet cannot access the 4
intranet network.

Extranet

Introduction
An extranet is an organization’s private network
and its available only for selected users. It’s a
way to connect to third parties like vendors,
customers, and partners in a secure and
controlled way. The users typically have a login mechanism such as
username and password to access the network.
Examples: 1. An e-commerce site exchanges information with its retailers,
a supplier’s through an extranet network.
2. University provides an e-learning platform for their students over the
extranet network. 8
Features
1. Data security: Sharing confidential data is of utmost priority and
the extranet provides a safe environment for data sharing between
the organizations. This decreases the chance of loss of confidential
data and increases productivity.
2. Faster communication: Extranet allows to connect multiple
organizations and escalate the communication between them.
3. Flexibility: Extranet provides a flexible and scalable environment
to work on for everyone involved, which also increases the
productivity of the organization.
4. Cost: It may decrease the cost of paperwork and travel to some
extent.
5. Authentication: It provides authentication mechanisms like
username and password. Therefore, only authorized users can 9

access the network.

Implementation
An extranet is implemented as a Virtual private network (VPN)
that provides secure communication between the organizations.
VPN creates a secure connection over a public network such as
the internet. The VPN is formed on Internet Protocol security
(IPsec) which provides an extra layer on the already present
TCP/IP i.e. Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol.

The IPsec connection (tunneling) provides:

1. Privacy: To maintain confidentiality between the sources.
2. Integrity: To protect and share the data securely between
the resources.
3. Authentication: To allow only authorized users on the 10

network.
