Matter and Its Properties

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All the
physical things around us, from the air we breathe to the
chairs we sit on, are examples of matter. In this presentation,
we'll explore the different physical and chemical properties of
matter, as well as the various states it can take.
Physical Properties of
Matter
These are characteristics that can be observed without
changing the substance's chemical composition.
States of Matter: Solid,
Liquid, Gas
Solid Liquid

packed together.

Gas
Gases have no fixed shape or volume and can expand to
fill their container.
Changes of State: Melting,
Boiling, Evaporation
Melting
The process of a solid turning into a liquid when heated.

Boiling
The process of a liquid turning into a gas when heated.

Evaporation
The process of a liquid turning into a gas at its surface.

recovered.
Atoms and Molecules

Atoms
The smallest units of an element that still have its properties.

Molecules
Groups of atoms bonded together to form more complex substances.

Periodic Table
A chart that organizes all the known elements based on their properties.
Mixtures and Solutions

Mixture A combination of two or

more substances that are
not chemically bonded.

Solution A homogeneous mixture of
