CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
DEFINITION AND TYPES
Conflict resolution can be defined as the informal or
4
formal process that two or more parties use to find a
peaceful solution to their dispute. Conflict is an
“interactive process manifested in incompatibility,
disagreement, or dissonance within or between social
entities” (Rahim, 1992, p. 16). This helps maintain
peace and ensure that all parties involved have a
positive outcome that serves them equally.
Specifically, though, conflict resolution in relationships
also plays an important role in maintaining the
relationship’s health. Usually, conflicts happen due to
miscommunications, differences in opinions or
personalities, projecting stress and more.
In this context, understanding how individuals choose
to resolve conflicts gives us a glimpse into how their
personalities have a role to play.

After reviewing a few articles and research papers, the mode
of testing most of them have used is the Big Five
Personality approach – the five traits commonly known as
OCEAN – Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness and Neuroticism or Emotional Negativity.
Therefore, this presentation will compare personality’s impact
on conflict from the perspective of this testing method.
