CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
DEFINITION AND TYPES
Conflict resolution can be defined as the informal or
4
formal process that two or more parties use to find a
peaceful solution to their dispute. Conflict is an
“interactive process manifested in incompatibility,
disagreement, or dissonance within or between social
entities” (Rahim, 1992, p. 16). This helps maintain
peace and ensure that all parties involved have a
positive outcome that serves them equally.
Specifically, though, conflict resolution in relationships
also plays an important role in maintaining the
relationship’s health. Usually, conflicts happen due to
miscommunications, differences in opinions or
personalities, projecting stress and more.
In this context, understanding how individuals choose
to resolve conflicts gives us a glimpse into how their
personalities have a role to play.
There are 5 common types of conflict resolution
styles: Conflict Self-Goals Other’s

IMPACT OF PERSONALITY
AND CORRELATION
7
After reviewing a few articles and research papers, the mode
of testing most of them have used is the Big Five
Personality approach – the five traits commonly known as
OCEAN – Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness and Neuroticism or Emotional Negativity.
Therefore, this presentation will compare personality’s impact
on conflict from the perspective of this testing method.

Openness emphasizes imagination and insight the most out of

all five personality traits. Conscientiousness is one defined by
high levels of thoughtfulness, good impulse control, and goal-
directed behaviours. Extraversion is a personality trait
characterized by excitability, sociability, talkativeness,
assertiveness, and high amounts of emotional expressiveness.
This personality trait includes attributes such as trust,
altruism, kindness, affection, and other prosocial behaviours.

The results of the review show that neuroticism and

agreeableness are positively related to the avoiding style. A
positive correlation is observed between agreeableness,
extroversion, openness, and conscientiousness with the
compromising style. However, there is a negative correlation
between agreeableness and adapting the competing style of
conflict resolution.

A positive link is identified between agreeableness and the

accommodating style. Finally, agreeableness, extroversion,
openness to experience, and conscientiousness are positively
correlated and neuroticism is negatively correlated to the
collaborating style.
