Lesson 4:
Venn
Venn DIAGRAM
A Venn diagram is a graphical
representation used to
illustrate the relationships
between sets. It consists of
overlapping circles, where
each circle represents a set
and the overlaps show the
intersections of the sets.
Venn diagrams are commonly used to:
•Compare and contrast sets: By visualizing the overlaps
and non-overlaps, you can easily see the similarities and
differences between sets.
•Show the relationships between sets: Venn diagrams
can illustrate how sets are related to each other, such as
being subsets or supersets.
•Solve problems involving sets: They can be helpful in
solving problems related to set theory, such as finding
unions, intersections, or complements of sets.
Symbols Used in Venn Diagrams
•Circle: Represents a set. Each circle in a Venn diagram
represents a distinct set.
•Overlap: The area where two circles intersect represents the
intersection of the two sets, meaning the elements that are
common to both sets.
•Non-overlapping area: The area within a circle that does not
overlap with any other circle represents the elements unique to that
set.
•Universal set: Sometimes a rectangle or square is used to
represent the universal set, which contains all the elements under
consideration.

A travel agency wants to understand the overlap in tourists
visiting three popular destinations in the Philippines: Bohol,
El Nido, and Siargao. They have collected data on the
number of tourists who visited each destination and the

•El Nido: 325 tourists visited El Nido alone.
•Siargao: 306 tourists visited Siargao alone.
•Bohol and El Nido: 87 tourists visited both Bohol and El
Nido.
•Bohol and Siargao: 79 tourists visited both Bohol and
Siargao.
•El Nido and Siargao: 90 tourists visited both El Nido and
Siargao.
•All Three: 56 tourists visited all three destinations.

Here's what they found:
•83 people bought a dog product.
•101 people bought a cat product.
•22 people bought a fish product.
•31 people bought both a dog and a cat
product.
•8 people bought both a dog and a fish product.

English, or Biology, they were taking this semester.
Here's a summary of the survey results:
•35 students responded that they were taking English.
•50 students responded that they were taking Mathematics.
•29 students responded that they were taking Biology.
•12 students responded that they were taking both
Mathematics and English.
•8 students responded that they were taking both English
and Biology.
•11 students responded that they were taking both Biology
and Mathematics.
•5 students responded that they were taking all three
subjects.
Based on this information, you can answer questions
like:
1.How many students are not taking any of the three subjects?
