Angular Position,

Velocity, and
Acceleration
An Overview of Rotational Motion
GENERAL PHYSICS 1
SY 2024-2025
Angular Motion
- motion of an object
around a fixed point or
axis
Applications:
*rotating wheels
*planetary orbits
*rotating machinery
Angular Displacement (θ)
-measures the angle (in
radians or degrees) of an
object from a reference point
Angular Displacement

- vector quantity

- represented by a circular arrow

pointing from the initial point to
the final point, which is either
clockwise or anti-clockwise in
direction
Angular displacement
-angle measured in radians

-defined as the shortest

angle between the initial and
the final points for a given
object undergoing circular
motion about a fixed point
Formula:
Angular Displacement (θ)

θ=s/r
s - arc length
Angular Displacement (θ)
- can be measured in degrees (°),
radians (rads) or revolutions

1 rev =360° = 2π radians = 6.28

radians
A radian is the angle you get
when making the arc length
equal to the radius of the circle.

A radian is equal to 180/pi or

57.3 degrees.
Problem 1:

Rohit bought a pizza of a

radius of 0.5 m. A fly lands on
the pizza and walks around the
edge for a distance of 80 cm.
Calculate the angular
displacement of the fly?
Problem 2:
Neena goes around a
circular track that has a
diameter of 7 m. If she runs
around the entire track for a
distance of 50 m, what is her
angular displacement?
Angular Velocity (ω)
- rate at which an object
rotates or changes its
angular position
Unit: Radians per second
By convention,
positive angular velocity
indicates counterclockwise
rotation, while negative is
clockwise.
The relationship between angular
velocity and linear velocity may
be obtained in a straight forward
fashion by replacing Δθ by (Δs)/r
Problem 1
If a ball is travelling in a
circle of diameter 10m with
velocity 20m/s, find the
angular velocity of the ball.
If a ball is travelling in a
circle of diameter 20m with
velocity 40m/s, then calculate
the angular velocity of the
ball.
Assume that a car tire rotates
10 times a second. The tire has
a diameter of 10 inches. Find
the angular velocity in radians
per second.
Finding the Angular Velocity
Direction
The direction of angular velocity is the
direction in which the thumb points
when you curl your fingers in the
direction of the disc’s rotation.

The direction of angular velocity is

always perpendicular to the plane of
rotation.
What is the direction of
the angular velocity
vector of the hour hand of
a wall clock as you look at
it?
The hour hand rotates clockwise, so by the
right-hand rule, the angular velocity vector
is into the wall.
Angular Acceleration (α)

- rate of change of
angular velocity over
time
Units:
Radians per
second
squared
(rad/s²).

A powerful motorcycle can
accelerate from 0 to 30.0 m/s
(about 108 km/h) in 4.20 s. What
is the angular acceleration of its
0.320-m-radius wheels?
