    At the end of this lesson, students should be able to;

    • Define the term, computer software


    • State the types of software
    • Give examples of each type of computer software.
    Computer Software
    Software, also called a program, is a series of instructions
    that tell the computer what to do and how to do it.
    In other words, it is a collection of computer programs,
    procedures and documentation that perform different tasks
    on a computer system. The software is a program written
    by a programmer or software developer.
    Types of Computer Software

    There are two types of computer software, they


    are:

    1.System software
    2.Application Software
    System Software
    These are software designed to directly operate the computer
    hardware to provide basic functionality needed by users and
    other computer software. It provides a platform for running
    application software.
    Examples of system software include:
    1. Operating systems: They are essential collections of
    software that manage resources and provides common services
    for other software that runs “on top” of them.
    2. Utility Software: They are computer programs designed to
    assist users in maintenance and care of their computers
    Application Software
    Application software is a program that is designed to
    accomplish a specific task.
    Some examples include:
    • Word processors: Ms word, Wordpad, Notepad, etc.
    • Spreadsheets: Ms Excel, Quart Pro, etc.
    • Graphics software: Corel Draw, Ms paint, etc.
    • Databases: Ms Access
    • Games application: Solitaire, League of Legends, etc
    • Presentation software: Ms Powerpoint
