Instrumentation amplifier
Vanshika Saxena WHAT IS AN INSTRUMENTATION AMPLIFIER
An instrumentation amplifier is a type of
differential amplifier that amplifies the difference between two input signals while rejecting any common-mode signals (signals that are present on both inputs). It is commonly used in measurement and test equipments.

The instrumentation amplifier consists of three operational amplifiers (op-amps), The two input signals are applied to the first and second op-amps. The third op-amp is used as a differential amplifier The gain of the differential amplifier can be adjusted by changing the values of two external resistors. The output of the instrumentation amplifier is a high-precision amplified signal that is proportional to the difference between the two input signals, and is free from any Dr. S.K.Singh 5 common-mode noise or interference 11/03/2024 Block diagram of instrumentation amplifier

The instrumentation amplifier should have high gain and should be accurate.
The gain should be easily adjustable using
a single control.
It must have High Input Impedance and
Low Output Impedance
The Instrumentation amplifier should have
High CMRR
It must also have a High Slew Rate.

Advantages of Instrumentation Amplifier
12 Dr. S.K.Singh 11/03/2024
The gain of a three op-amp instrumentation amplifier circuit can be easily varied The gain of the amplifier depends only on the external resistors used. The input impedance is very high. The output impedance of the instrumentation amplifier is very low. The CMRR of the op-amp 3 is very high and almost all of the common mode signal will be rejected.

Applications of Instrumentation Amplifier
14 Dr. S.K.Singh 11/03/2024
Instrumentation amplifiers are used in data acquisition from small o/p transducers like thermocouples, strain gauges, measurements of Wheatstone bridge, etc. These amplifiers are used in navigation, medical, radar, etc. These amplifiers are used to enhance the S/N ratio (signal to noise) in audio applications like audio signals with low amplitude. These amplifiers are used for imaging as well as video data acquisition in the conditioning of high-speed signal. 15 These Dr. S.K.Singh amplifiers are used in RF cable 11/03/2024 • Overall, the instrumentation amplifier provides high accuracy, high gain, and high common-mode rejection, making it an essential tool in many measurement and sensing applications, including strain gauge amplifiers, thermocouple amplifiers, and other sensor signal conditioning circuits.
