of the string apart. As you do this, the string will unwind. Pay
close attention to the colors on the paper plate. You should
see the different colors spreading out.
• The passage refers to a popular mnemonic device used to remember the colors of
the visible light spectrum in order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and
Violet. The name "ROY G. BIV" is constructed from the first letters of each color:
• R - Red
• O - Orange
• Y - Yellow
• G - Green
• B - Blue
• I - Indigo
• V - Violet
• Explanation of the Passage:
• Mnemonic Device:
• A mnemonic is a memory aid that helps people remember information. "ROY G. BIV" is an
easy-to-recall phrase that helps you list the colors of the visible spectrum in order.
• Indigo:
• Indigo is sometimes included in the color spectrum and is located between blue and
violet. While it is often debated whether indigo is distinct enough to be considered a
separate color, it is traditionally included in the mnemonic.
• The reference to indigo as having a specific frequency range means that it corresponds to
a particular wavelength of light within the spectrum, sitting between blue (shorter
wavelength) and violet (even shorter wavelength).
Draw Circles:
Use the compass to draw a large circle in the center of the white paper plate.
You can make smaller circles inside this large circle using the compass to create different sections.
Mark Sections:
Use the ruler to divide the large circle into sections for each color (red, green, blue). You
can do this by drawing straight lines from the center of the circle to the edge.
Color the Sections:
Take your crayons and color each section with the corresponding color:
Color one section red, one green, and one blue.
Feel free to mix colors if you want to add more colors to the spectrum!
Prepare the String:
Take the 1-yard string and twist it to create a spiral shape.
This string will represent the waves of light.
Finish Your Setup:
Once everything is colored and the string is twisted, make sure your setup looks similar
to the figure you have.
Final Step:
Pull the Twisted String: Gently pull the ends of the twisted string apart to unwind it,
and observe how the colors on the plate look as you do this.
Colors: Notice how the colors appear on the plate and how they separate from each
other.
Spectrum: This shows how light can be made up of different colors, just like in a
rainbow.
Purpose of This Step:
This action helps you see how light waves work. Just like the string unwinding, light can
separate into different colors, each with its own wavelength.
