SELF – AWARENESS

AND
VALUES FORMATION
OBJECTIVES:
• Relate one’s self to discover purposes, abilities and
limitations;
• Discuss the importance of self – awareness in
relating with others;
• Explain the link between self – awareness and
values education.
WHAT IS SELF?
Self is that the inner force, common to all human
beings and yet unique in each, which is the deep
source of growth.
SELF - ACCEPTANCE
Is to let the individual understand and accept himself
before others.
SELF - AWARENESS
On the other hand, means to accept one’s self, one’s
strength and weakness to the extent that one
develops a clear picture of personhood; to reveal
oneself to others by investing or taking risk towards
growth; to express one’s feelings and in a loving
concern.
• The key to you inner Self is: awareness
• Your inner self is Subtler; it can easily be
overpowered by your personality due nature of
defenselessness.
SELF - AWARENESS AND IT’S IMPORTANCE
• Self – awareness means looking objectively at your
values, personality, needs, habits, emotions,
strengths, weakness, etc.
SELF - AWARENESS AND IT’S IMPORTANCE
• With a sense of who you are and a vision of the
person you want to become, a plan for professional or
personal development can be created.
SELF - AWARENESS AND IT’S IMPORTANCE
• Moreover, self – awareness allows you to motivate
yourself and manage your stress better, helps you
with your intuitive decision making, and helps you to
lead and motivate others more effectively.
SELF – ESTEEM
• The overall evaluation of oneself.
• How we evaluate ourselves is a crucial element in
our psychological adjustment.
• Positive self – esteem effects our physical well –
being as well as likelihood for success.
ENHANCING
SELF - ESTEEM
STOP COMPARING
• Stop comparing yourself with other people. There
will always be some who have less. If you play the
comparison game, you’ll run into too many
“opponents“ you can’t defeat.

STOP PUTTING YOURSELF DOWN
• You can’t develop high self – esteem if you repeat
negative phrases about yourself and your abilities.
Whether speaking about your appearances, your
career, your relationships, your financial situation, or
any other aspects of your life, avoid self – deprecating
comments.
USE AFFIRMATION TO ENHANCE SELF - ESTEEM
• Write out a statement such as “I like and accept
myself” or “I am valuable, lovable person and
deserve the best in life”. Carry the card with you.

• Repeat the statement several times during the day,
especially at night before going to bed and after
getting up in the morning.

• Whenever you say the affirmation, allow yourself to
experience positive feelings about your statement.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WORKSHOPS, BOOKS AND
PROGRAMS ON SELF – ESTEEM
• What ever material you allow to dominate mind will
eventually take root and affect your behavior.
• If you watch negative television programs or read
newspaper reports of murders and business rip off;
you will grow cynical and pessimistic.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WORKSHOPS, BOOKS AND
PROGRAMS ON SELF – ESTEEM
• Similarly , if you read books or listen to programs,
that are positive in nature, you will take on these
characteristics.
ASSOCIATE WITH POSITIVE, SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE
• When you surrounded by negative people who
constantly put you and your ideas down, your self –
esteem’s lowered.
• On the other hand, when you are accepted and
encouraged, you feel better about yourself in the best
possible environment to raise your self – esteem.
MAKE A LIST OF YOUR PAST SUCCESSES
• This doesn’t really necessarily to have to consist of
monumental accomplishments.
• It can include your “ minor victories “ like learning
to skate… receiving an award or promotion, reaching
a business goal, etc.
MAKE A LIST OF YOUR PAST SUCCESSES

• Read this list often. While reviewing it, close your


eyes and recreate the feelings of satisfaction and joy
you experienced when first attained each success.
MAKE A LIST OF YOUR POSITIVE QUALITIES
• Are you honest? Unselfish? Helpful? Creative? Be
generous with yourself and write down at least 20
positive qualities. Again, it’s important to review this
list often.
• Start focusing on your positive traits and you’ll
stand a much better chance of achieving what you
wish to achieve.
START GIVING MORE
• Is not the matter of money. Rather, that you must
begin to give more of yourself to those around you.
• When you do things for others, you are making a
positive contribution and you begin to feel more
valuable, which in turn, lifts your spirits and raises
your own – esteem.
BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
• Live your own life – not the life others have decided
is best for you. You’ll never gain own respect and feel
good about yourself if you aren’t leading the life you
want to lead.
• If your making decisions based on getting approval
from friends and relatives, you aren’t being true to
yourself and your self – esteem is lowered.
TAKE ACTION
• You won’s develop high self – esteem if you sit on
the sidelines and back away from challenges.
• When you take – action regardless of the ensuring
result you feel better about yourself. When you fail to
move forward because fear and anxiety, you’ll be
frustrated and unhappy – and you will undoubtedly
deal damaging blow to your self – esteem.

FACE YOUR PROBLEM

• Build up your confidence so you can perform better


in situations and progress in you.
WORK ON YOUR CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS
• Improving your conversational skills can help you
feel more comfortable and confident in any social
situation which will lead to larger confidence overall.
• If you maintaining eye contact and being a good
listener, you will also give off a more confident aura
and you can enjoy the benefits of being treated as a
confident person.
SET GOALS
• As with anything you want to achieve, building
confidence will be easier if you set specific goals.
• Whether you want to be confident enough to be
president of an organization or simply give a
presentation at the next department meeting, you
can then create an action plan for achieving this goal.
GET INVOLVED
• When you become involved in an organization,
project or committee, the new experiences, improved
skills, and chances for leadership and personal
development can help improve confidence.
• Think about joining a professional organization,
signing up for a committee at work or volunteering
your time at a worthwhile organization.
USED POSITIVE IMAGERY AND SELF – TALK
• The road to self – confidence is preliminary a
mental exercise. Visualizing yourself as a confident
person is one way to create a confident, mentality.
• Positive affirmations are another way of building
confidence. Tell yourself that you are confident
person and don’t give negative thought room to grow.
PRACTICE A CONFIDENT ATTITUDE
• You may have heard this sentiment expressed as “fake
it till make it”. The truth is that you can gain confidence
by acting like a confident person.
• Nobody needs to know that you’re cringing
underneath your confident façade. Eventually, you’ll no
longer need to pretend. The success you experience for
acting confident and the confident habits you’ve
developed will lead to true confidence.
TRY NEW THINGS
• New experiences can give you confidence by helping
you grow as a person.
• You don’t have to take up sky diving or anything
drastic like that. Starting new hobby or taking a class is
more likely to help you develop lasting skills anyway.
BE HAPPY WITH YOURSELF
• Having an essentially positive attitude toward yourself
is key to gaining confidence. You must be happy with
the person you are, from your personality to your
appearance, before you can truly be confident.

• The five steps that control your success or failure.


BEHAVIOR
• The step that most directly control your success or
failure is your behavior (“action”) --- what you do or not
do!
• The right series of the right actions will always end up
making things work better that the wrong series of the
wrong actions. In most cases, if you do the right thing,
you will achieve the right results!
FEELINGS

• How you “feel” about something always affects what


you do and how well you do it!
ATTITUDE

• Your “attitudes” are the perspectives from which you


view life.
BELIEFS
• What you “believe” about anything WILL determine
your attitudes about it, create your feelings, direct your
actions, and in each instance, help YOU do well or
poorly, succeed or fail! The belief that you have about
anything is so powerful that it can even make something
appear to be something “different” than what it really
is!
BELIEFS
• Belief does not require that something be the way you
perceive (“see”) it is. It only requires that you believe
that it is! In other words, belief does not require
something to be true. It only requires you to “believe
that it is true!”
BELIEFS

• That means most of what “reality” is ---- to you --- is


based on what you have come to believe --- whether it
is true or not.
PROGRAMMING

• Your beliefs are created and directed entirely by your


“programming.” in other words, you believe what you
are programmed to believe.

• Your programming (“conditioning”) from the day you
were born, has created reinforced, and nearly
permanently cemented most of what you believe about
yourself and what you believe about most of what goes
on around you. Whether the programming was right or
wrong, true or false. The result of programming is what
you believe! It all starts with your programming.

• It is your programming that sets up your beliefs, the
“chain Reaction” begins. In logical progression, what
you believe determines your attitudes, affects your
feelings, direct your behavior, and determines your
success or failure!

NEGATIVE ACCEPTANCE

• These are items you tell yourself that are negative


reinforcements or negative beliefs about yourself. these
are the “I can’t…” or “If only ….” or “I wish I could ….
But….”
RECOGNITION AND NEED TO CHANGE

• These are the “I need to…” or “I ought to …” or “I


should …”. These statement always end up with the
subconscious “but I’m not going to do anything about
it”.
DECISION TO CHANGE

• Here you recognize the need to changes and begin to


do something about it. These statements go like this; “I
never …” or “I no longer …” here you rephrase the old
phrases “can’t with a positive.
THE BETTER YOU

• These are the “I am …” phrases that facilitate change.


Really the way you want to be. Here you say “I have
a ...” “I will …” “I do …”
UNIVERSAL AFFIRMATION

• This level is considered “oneness” with God. Like a


Buddhist monk.
PERSONALITY
• Your personality makes the sum total of your
psychological traits and characteristics.
• It determines your adjustments to the environment
making you appealing or repelling to other people.
STEPS HOW TO

1. Accept that improvement is needed.
2. Have a strong desire to improve.
3. Evaluate yourself honestly by making a checklist of
your strong and weak points.
4. Follow a step-by-step plan for improvement. Do
something to change for the better.
5. Do not stop until you have finally improved or
developed your personality.

THE FAMILY AND THE HOME ENVIRONMENT
• The home plays a vital role in the development of the
character of individuals.
• The childbearing practices, family relations, and
family attitudes and orientation are the main
components of the home environment.
• The child grows in the family, which full of love, high
nurturance, low independence training, and low
discipline.

• With this kind of environment, the child learns
security and trust, but dependent on the other hand.
• In the indulgent environment where rigid standards
of behavior have to be observed or performance are not
imposed, there is lack of discipline.

• We are social beings and we cannot live without the
support of one another, to “no man is an island.”
• No one can survive without depending on another
person.
CULTURE AND LANGUAGE
• Filipinos have been noted as warm and our being
person – oriented, devoted to family, and with sense of
joy and humor are part of our culture and reinforced by
all socializing forces such as the family, school, and the
peer group.

minded to the outside forces which easily accepts
foreign elements without being conscious of cultural
core.
• This is brought by our colonial mentality in which we
feel the white Americans are superior to us, hence the
acceptance of the English language as the medium of

• Our mentality is the product of our colonial history,
which is regarded as the culprit for our lack of
nationalism.
• Colonialism developed a mind-set on us, to think of
the colonial power as superior and more powerful.

• With the invasion of the Spaniards and Americans, we
developed a sense of dependence on foreign powers
that made us believe we are a second class citizen to
them and we are not responsible for our country’s fate.
EDUCATION SYSTEM
• Going back to our history, our curriculum was
patterned from the American educational system.
• Problems cropped up because the textbooks being
used are still dependent on foreign sources.
• The knowledge derived from these books is not
relevant to the Philippine setting.
• At present, we still lack suitable local textbooks.
RELIGION
• It plays a vital role on in the spiritual and moral
development of an individual.
• It is the root of Filipino optimism and its capacity to
accept life’s hardships.
ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT
• Poverty is the number one felt problem in our society
and it serves as an excuse for graft and corruption in our
bureaucracy.
• It is also the vital factor in the crime incidence in our
country as well as all over the world.
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT
• Our government is obliged to deliver the basic
services to the people and in return, we pay our taxes.
• Our Philippine political government is characterized by
greed and power during election.
• There are those who are killed if they actively
participate in political campaigns.

• The political power and authority are concentrated in
the hands of the elite and the participation of the
people is limited only to voting in elections.
MASS MEDIA
• They have strong impact on the moral development of
the youth.
• The children idolized young actors and actresses.
• If they portray negative values, it is internalized in our
children’s mind.

PAKIKIPAGKAPWA - TAO ( REGARD FOR OTHERS )
• This is manifested in a basic sense of justice and
fairness, ability to emphasize with others, helpfulness
and generosity in times of need (pakikiramay) in the
practice of bayanihan of mutual assistance, in the
famous hospitality and in concern for others.
PAKIKIPAGKAPWA - TAO ( REGARD FOR OTHERS )
• Pakikipagkapwa-tao results in camaraderie and feeling
of closeness to one another.
• It is the foundation of unity as well as sense of social
justice.

• Filipinos possess sensitivity to other’s feelings
(pakiramdam), pagtitiwala or trust, and a sense of
gratitude or utang na loob.
• Opening yourself to others and feel one with others
with dignity and respect life as fellow human beings.
FAMILY ORIENTATION

manifested in the honor, and respect for parents and

belongingness and rootedness and in basic sense of
security.

• Filipinos by nature are fond of social celebrations.
• We inherited this character from the Spaniards.
• We have a positive attitude to our ups and downs in
our lives because despite the odds, we still have the
capacity to laugh even at the most trying times and
laughing is an important coping mechanism.
FLEXIBILITY, ADAPTABILITY AND CREATIVE
• Filipinos have a great capacity to adjust, become
creative, resourceful, adept at learning and have the
ability to improvise and make use of whatever is on
hand in order to create and produce any thing.

ability to adapt themselves to a change of environment
in any part of the world, in their ability to make new
things out of scrap and keep old equipment running.

• This pertains to the desire to raise one’s standard of
living by working very hard, given proper conditions and
to possess the essentials of a decent life for their loved
ones.
• This is manifested by their courage to go aboard, and
take the risk or even work at two or three jobs.
FAITH AND RELIGIOSITY
• Filipinos are notes for deep faith in God because of
the belief of life after death.
• Their ultimate goal is to go to heaven and they are
afraid of the ball of fire or otherwise known as hell.
• Filipinos live very intimately with religion and that is
very tangible in our everyday lives.

• Before we sleep, eat and go to school or work, we
pray because we believe that whatever bad omen we
may face we will always be saved by HIM.
• The Filipinos’ faith results in courage, daring,
optimism, inner peace, as well as the capacity to

• We are known for our ability to survive despite the
economic difficulties we are encountering.
• Filipinos make the most with whatever is available in
the environment.
WEAKNESS OF THE
FILIPINO CHARACTER
EXTREME PERSONALISM
• This is manifested in the tendency to give personal
interpretations to actions, e.g. pakiusap (request), lagay
and regalo (fixing), palakasan (power and influence,
nepotism and favoritism and to make things personally.
EXTREME FAMILY CENTEREDNESS
• While it is true that concern for the family is one of
the Filipinos greatest strengths, in the extreme it
becomes a serious flaw.
• E.g. use of one’s office and power as a means of
promoting the interests of the family members, in
factionalism, patronage, and political dynasties and in
the protection of erring family members.
EXTREME FAMILY CENTEREDNESS
• Excessive concern for the family could be detrimental
to the common good and acts as a block to national
consciousness.
LACK OF DISCIPLINE
• This is manifested in relaxed attitude towards time,
tagged as “Filipino time” and space which it itself is lack
of precision, in compulsiveness in poor time
management and delays of wok, and in procrastination.
• We are impatient and unable to delay of work
gratification or reward resulting in the use of short cuts,
skirting the rules (the palusot syndrome) and in
foolhardiness.
LACK OF DISCIPLINE
• We are also notes as of “ningas cogon”, starting the
projects with full vigor and interest which abruptly die
down, leaving the things unfinished.
PASIVITY AND LACK OF INITIATIVE
• Filipinos are generally passive and lacking initiative.
One has to be told what has to be done. This is related
to a hammer (an authority), Filipinos need for a strong
authority figure and feel safer and more secure if the
things that they are going to do come from the
instructions of the superior.

• Filipinos are submissive to those in authority, and are
not likely to raise issues or to questions decisions. There
is a high tolerance for inefficiency, poor service, and
even violations of one’s basic rights.
• In other words, Filipinos are too patient and can bear
long suffering (matiisin) hence, we are easily oppressed
and exploited.
COLONIAL MENTALITY
• This pertains to the openness of the Filipinos to the
outside – adapting and incorporating the foreign
elements into our image of ourselves. This is manifested
to or acceptance of modern mass culture, which is often
Western

• Such mentality is made up of two dimensions: first is
lack of patriotism or an active awareness, appreciation,
and love of the Philippines; the second is an actual
preference for foreign things.
KANYA – KANYA SYNDROME
• Filipinos have a selfish, self – serving attitude that
generates a feeling of envy and competitiveness
towards others. These characteristics could be
described as “crab mentality”, using the leveling
instruments of gossips or “tsismiss”, intrigue or “intriga”
and unconstructive criticism to bring others down.
There is a tendency to pull down these who are on top
because of personal ambition.
LACK OF SELF – ANALYSIS AND SELF REFLECTION

• Filipino emphasis on form (maporma) rather than


substance. Filipinos tendency is to joke at something
even if it is serious matter and prevent from looking
deeply into the problem.
FILIPINO INDOLENCE
• The Filipinos were called by the Spaniards as indolent
which means lazy and lack of initiative and ambition,
but Rizal refuted this negative description and explained
that:
• It is unhealthy to work in the Philippine hot climate;
• The industries during the Spanish era proved that they
were not lazy, but instead the invaders forced labor and
closed down the industries.
MANANA HABIT
• This negative attitude was inherited from the
Spaniards. This means putting off or tomorrow what can
be done today or procrastination. It has the element of
fatalism and is linked with “bahala na” attitude.
FIESTA SYNDROME
• This is still being celebrated in the rural areas. Filipinos
celebrate so many occasions like feast of the Patron
Saint of their place, birthdays, baptismal and
confirmation of their child, marriage, anniversaries, etc.
HOSPITALITY
• The Filipino families are very much well known for the
hospitality. The visitors are welcomes warmly with full
of enthusiasm. They are offered the best food and even
to the extent of depriving themselves just only to please
their visitors.
