Learning Objectives
The Purpose of this course is to provide students the opportunity to
understand :
 Networking terminologies (LAN, WAN, MAN, and SAN),
 Networking models (OSI and TCP/IP) ,
 Networking protocols,
 IP addressing,
 sub-netting, routing, and networking configuration.
 In particular, It will help students to identify and describe the structure and
technologies of computer networks,
 describe the topologies and physical issues associated with cabling common LANs,
 identify the different layers of the OSI and TCP/IP models and the differences between
them,
 design an IP addressing scheme to meet design requirements of the network, and
 understand the Domain and Work-group network architecture.
Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, You will be able to :

Define and describe the structure and technologies of computer networks,
Define LAN, WAN, MAN, SAN, and VLAN
Identify physical components needed for the network infrastructure: Describe the
function, advantages, and disadvantages of repeaters, hubs, bridges, switches, and
wireless network components.
Describe the topologies and physical issues associated with cabling common LANs.
Understand cable categories, connection tools, and cable structures :identify
straight-through, crossover, and rollover cables.
Identify each of the seven layers of the OSI model
Identify the four layers of the TCP/IP model
Describe the similarities and differences between the two models
Learning Outcome
(cont’d)

By the end of the course, You will be able to :

 Understand the role of protocols in networking
 Understand IP addressing- IPV4 and IPV6
 Design an IP addressing scheme to meet design requirements of the network
 Basics of Router Configuration
 Understand Domain and work group users
 Describe the function of peer-to-peer networks
 Describe the function, advantages and disadvantages of client-server networks

Course Outcome: Students be able to install, configure, and operate simple-routed LAN, routed WAN
and switched Virtual LAN (VLAN) networks.
They will submit technical reports on Network Implementation Based on Design and Specifications

Class Preparation
•Students are expected to participate
effectively in class discussions.

• For that, students are encouraged to

read the assigned chapter in the
textbook PRIOR TO each class meeting.
• This will be helpful for students to be
familiar with the class discussion topics
and to understand the lecture.
Assignment Policy

• Assignment consists of both individual and team assignments.

• Individual assignments include some exercises that will be announced in the class or
via email. Students are expected to submit the answers for the assigned exercise
questions.

• The team assignments will be based on the final term technical report. Each team
shall submit a project technical report on Network Implementation based on Design
and Specifications (More details is provided in the class).
Final Term Project

◦ Students are required to apply the concepts of network infrastructure & management
to their assigned project.
◦ Teams will be formed during the second lecture. Each team will be composed of
roughly 5 students (depends on number of students in the class).
◦ The technical reports of the projects will run for the duration of the course and at
the end of the course, each team should submit and present his report that should
have two types of deliverables: i) A power point presentation, and ii) a written
technical report.
◦ Final deliverables submission will be due to two weeks before the end of the course. I
will not accept any delayed submission under any circumstances.
◦ More detailed information about the technical project guidelines will be provided in
class.
Exam Policy

◦ Students are required to take the exam as scheduled. Everyone is expected to follow the
instructions.
◦ No compensating exams will be available for the midterm and final exams except for
those with valid reason (such as Doctor’s note on their conditions).
◦ Exams are closed book exams. Students are not allowed to bring any lecture notes or
materials related to the course.
◦ In terms of the questions that will be asked in the exams, students may expect any
questions that cover any material presented in the lecture notes, reading assignments,
case studies, and discussions.
◦ All exams and homework assignments results must be the student’s own work. Any
unauthorized collaboration on assignments or any plagiarism will result in no credit and
will be subject to further actions under KDU’s statements on academic integrity.
Lecture Note

• The lecture notes are mostly based on the following textbook

1.Todd Lammle, “ Cisco Certified Network Associate”, 6/E Wiley
Publishing, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana, 2007.
2.Mackin J and McLean I ,”MCSE Implementing, Managing &
Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure”
(Microsoft, 2006) ISBN-10: 0735622884

• Relevant chapters and case studies are indicated in the

course schedule.
• Besides, some slides or notes that I will go over in class will be
prepared from another resources.
