& CREATING
VISUALIZATIONS
Week 7
◦Designing & Creating Visualizations
◦ Think like a designer when creating visualizations to tell a
coherent story.
Help better analysis through
Eye Movement
1. Where a person’s eyes look drives how they think
and analyze data.
2. Simple visualizations work better than complex
visualizations.
3. Less confusion on the brain leads to better focus.
4. Reduce the number of paths the eye can take
Examples
◦ Population in 50 States
Visual Similarity Does Not Imply Correlation

“When 1% is the same size as

40%, you missed the point of a
pie chart”
The Halo Effect

Attractive Viz
without any
insight cannot
add any value
for learning.

What attracts the eyes first
leverage the negative
or serious connotation
that red and big bold
letters can have.
What attracts the eyes first

Be aware of this
tension that it can
create in your
audience when you
emphasize multiple
things on the same
page (or in the same
graph).
What attracts the eyes first
Be aware of the
overall design of your
page and graphs to
make sure you aren't
putting important
elements somewhere
they might get
missed.
Position on page
◦ Example ◦ The zigzag “z” of taking in
information on a screen or page
What attracts eyes first

Colorful is not a good goal

when it comes to data
visualization. Rather, color,
used sparingly and
intentionally, is one of your
most strategic goals for
drawing your audiences
attention.
What attracts eyes first

Draw your
audience's attention
to the important
parts of your data
and the
communications that
contain them.
Human Limitations for
Visualizations
Human Sight is Imperfect
◦ From a physical perspective, our human nervous systems are designed
to find patterns from disparate data.
◦ What attracts the eyes first help the brain to make pattern.
◦ Example : This is how we recognize that a banana is not a pineapple
◦ Apophenia :
sometimes we look to perceive meaningful connections
between unrelated things.

Repetition
◦ To better help your audience’s memory, include patterns in the visualization.
◦ Patterns will help viewers chunk out the visualization and remember those chunks.
Tips to Make Beautiful and
Trusted Visualizations
◦Make visualization symmetrical and balanced.
◦Replace things with geometric shapes whenever
possible.
◦Use less colors whenever possible.
◦Use scale and size to determine importance.
Video
◦ The beauty of data visualization | David McCandless. (21.5 mins)
◦ Note how beauty, symmetry, color, and size can help you better understand data.
◦ What visuals have you seen that are beautiful and memorable?
Text is your friend
◦Don’t assume that
two different people
looking at the same
data visualization will
draw the same
conclusion.
Pre-attentive Attributes in Text
It All Starts With Trust
◦ Building trust means building
the confidence.
◦ Trust can almost be
guaranteed if your messages
are useful. You tell your
audience how to use your
information afterwards
Q How can you make
something negative -- like
fear -- beautiful for a
visualization?
A. Make it small relative to everything else.
B. Use a neutral colour so the fear is part of the landscape, but
is not the main attraction of the landscape.
C. Don’t include it in the visualization.
D. Colour the negative as green.
Think Like a Designer

◦Highlight important
items
◦Eliminate distractions
◦Create a clear visual
hierarchy of
information
What is Data interpreter and
pivot?
◦ Download “FDI Case Study-data interpreter” from week 7.
◦ Clean the data in both Excel and Tableau.

◦ Download “Incomeperperson” data set from week 7.

◦ Clean the data and show top 10 countries with highest Income from 2010 to 2018.

◦ Download the “NBA Players - Data Cleansing” from week 7.

◦ Clean the data. Your final result should include three different columns : Player name, player score,
and the scores for first, second and third round. (keep player name and All NBA (First, Second and
Third Team) columns to do the task).

◦ Download “Merged Data_clean in excel” dataset from week 7.

◦ Clean the dataset in Excel and show which category has the highest sales.

◦ Download “Vehicles dataset” from week 7.

◦ Clean the dataset and show how many vehicles have been sold in different regions from 2005 to 2014.
Practice Exercises - I
◦ How Much Do Americans Spend on Valentine’s Day?
◦ Create visualizations to do the following:
1. Compare the percent of spending for last year to show the percent of spending changed for the
previous years.
2. Compare how the percent of spending changed for what it was spent on.
3. Compare last year’s percentages to the previous year’s percentages.
4. Compare the percentages for gifts and for people at a high level and at a detailed level.
◦ Share what you create on the Discussion Board.
