RATIONAL NUMBER
A rational number is a number that
can be written as , where a and b are
integers and b ≠ 0. A rational number can
be represented as a fraction with non-zero
denominators.

Example of Rational Number are:

A O S N I

OPERATIONS
There are four basic arithmetic
operations with rational numbers namely:
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division.
To add or subtract two rational expressions with the
same denominator, we simply add or subtract the
numerators and write the result over the common
denominator. When the denominators are not the same, we
must manipulate them so that they become the same. In
others words, we must find the common denominator.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
And at the end of our discussion, you
are expected to:

• Performs multiplication of rational

numbers.
A rational number is any number of form , where a (the
numerator) and b (the denominator) are integers
(whole numbers), and b≠0.

numerator

denominator
In order to multiply two or more rational
numbers, we must multiply the numerators of
these rational numbers together and write the
result as the numerator of a new rational number,
then multiply the denominators together and write
the result as the denominator of the new rational
number. This new rational number is the result of
the multiplication. Also, it is important to know
that the order does not matter in multiplying
rational numbers.
In symbol,

We have,

where b, and d is not equal to zero.

Some rules of multiplying rational numbers:
• If the factors have the same sign, the
product is positive.
• If the factors have different sign, the
product is negative.

Examples:
1. (+)(+)
2. (-)(+)
3. (+)(-)
4. (-)(-)

A mixed number is a whole number and
a proper fraction represented together. It
generally represents a number between
any two whole numbers.
Look at the given image, it represents a fraction
that is greater than 1 but less than 2. It is thus a
mixed number.

= 1

Some other examples of mixed numbers

are:
Example No. 1:

• Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

• Multiply the numerators of the fraction and the multiply the

denominators of the fraction.

=
• Simplify and convert it into simplified form if required
Example No. 2:

• Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

• Multiply the numerators of the fraction and the multiply the

denominators of the fraction.

• Simplify and convert it into simplified form if required.

Example No. 3:

• Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

• Multiply the numerators of the fraction and the multiply

the denominators of the fraction.

• Simplify and convert it into simplified form if required.

Example No. 4:

• Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

• Multiply the numerators of the fraction and the multiply

the denominators of the fraction.

• Simplify the fraction.

Example No. 5:

• Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

• Multiply the numerators of the fraction and the multiply

the denominators of the fraction.

• Simplify and convert it into simplified form.

GROUP ACTIVITY:

“EQUATION RELAY”:

Materials:
 Equation Cards
 Pencil/Ballpen
 Relay Sheets
Directions:
Students play in 4 teams with 5 members. If possible, teams
should sit in columns. Each team will be given 3 equation cards
and must perform the steps in multiplying rational in mixed
number. The first student of each team will be the one to get the
first equation and pass the equation to the second student. The
second student of each team performs the first step in solving the
equation and then passes the relay sheet on to the third student.
The process continues until the equation is solved. Each student
is not allowed to change the work of their teammates and using
calculators/cellphones are prohibited.
If the equation is solved correctly, the team
earns a point. If the equation is solved correctly,
the team earns a point. If the equation is not
solved correctly, or if there's a member who
changed their teammates work and completes
more than one steps during his or her turn, the
team doesn't earn a point.
WORD PROBLEM:
Read the problem carefully and answer what is
asked.

eat?
Let us solve the problem.

Therefore, Kim ate of the whole pizza.
