Arthropoda (Arthropods)

- are joint-legged animals.

They make up the largest
group in the animal kingdom.
Their bodies and legs are
made up of sections. They
have an outside shell called
the exoskeleton.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTHROPODS

1. SEGMENTATION-
they have three main
body regions;
HEAD,
THORAX
ABDOMEN.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTHROPODS

2. EXOSKELETON
Arthropods have
hard exoskeleton
outside their body.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTHROPODS

3. JOINTED
APPENDAGES- these
are adapted for
feeding, sensing,
walking and
swimming.
Arthropods are divided into
four major groups:
1. insects;
2. myriapods (including centipedes and
millipedes);
3. arachnids (including spiders, mites and
scorpions);
4. crustaceans (including slaters, prawn and
crabs)
1. CRUSTACEANS

Crustaceans have five pairs of legs

for swimming or walking.
A Crustacean’s body is made up of
50 segments but most
crustaceans have only 19.
A Crustacean’s body has three
segments – HEAD, THORAX and
ABDOMEN.
Crustaceans have
two pairs of
antennae. The
antennae are
organs that touch,
taste and smell
food.
CRUSTACEANS
2. Insects are small, six-
legged animals or have three
pairs of walking legs, one or
two pairs of wings and a pair
of antennae.
Their legs are adapted for
crawling, collecting pollen and
jumping.
Insects are the largest group
of invertebrates.
Insects have
three main
body
sections –
HEAD,
THORAX
and
ABDOMEN
grasshopper

butterfly
3. Arachnids have four pairs
of walking legs.
Some have spinnerets which
they use to spin threads into
webs.
Arachnids
have two
body
segments
and have no
antennae.
4. Myriapods
 are animals with many
legs.
 many body segments
 live under rocks & dark
places
 have less than 100 legs
 protects itself by curling up
