Audio 1
Mother – Hi, mom, yeah, I was wondering if you could watch the kids this
evening? I have got to go to a business conference. I know it is short notice, but
Frank has got to work late tonight so I haven’t got any real options.
Grandmother – Yes, of course, darling. It’s no trouble at all. I love to spend as
much time as possible with grandchildren. I will be able to come by around 5 p.m.
if you would like.
Mother – That’s great, mom. I must leave at 6:30 to arrive on time. The
conference will start at 7:00. I might be able to arrive home around 9:30 I hope.
Grandmother – Don’t worry about it. Take your time and go for a drink after if you
would like. Don’t be rushing around or getting worked up for nothing. I do think you
need to find a good balance for yourself and Frank. The two of you are always
getting caught up in work and rarely seem to free for the kids as much as you once
were.
Mother – I know, mom, but it is very hard at the moment. I am trying to push for a
promotion, and I need to really go out of my way if I am going to have any chance
of being in the running to get it. And Frank is under serious pressure at the
moment due to the company underperforming. They had to make certain
employees redundant, so he is trying to prove his worth so to speak. Hopefully
sooner rather than later we get a good work-life balance and enjoy some good
quality family time.

Audio 2
Employee – Hello, ma’am. You wanted to speak with me.
Board member – Good morning, I have told all supervisors to select one employee
from their department to basically join me for a chat as I would like to get feedback
from our employees.
Employee – Ok, sounds good. What would you like to know?
Board member – Well, you can start off by telling me your name and what you do.
Employee – My name is Stan Matthews and I work in IT.
Board Member – Ok, Mr. Matthews, tell me what you like about working. Or should I
say do you like working here?
Employee – Yes, I do enjoy working here. I like working here a lot.
BM – Can you elaborate?
Employee – Certainly, for me personally I don’t know about other departments, but
our IT department is very close knit, and we all get along together. It is really nice to
come into a place knowing that you can count on your team and when you work in a
place where the atmosphere is good, I feel it boosts morale and will bring the best out
of the workers.
BM – That’s good. I know the IT department here is well run but that is nice to hear
that you really have a nice team spirit down there. Could you also explain to me in a
little bit more detail as to what it is that you do on a daily basis.
Employee – Well, I am the person responsible for the in-house
programming and for our systems administration. I also help with some
of the online marketing programs we have. I run some training
programmes for trainees on programming.
BM – Do you encounter any problems in terms of your work?
Employee – Sometimes I have to deal with little glitches from time to
time or explain certain changes to the system to employees but that’s
about it.
BM – Very good. Do you have to report to anyone or write up reports
weekly or things like that?
Employee – No, basically I just have to keep the systems in check and
make sure everything is working fine.

Patrick - Marcus would like to join me and the gang later, we are going to the
new barbecue restaurant on the corner.
Marcus – Do they serve anything that is not meat?
Patrick – Why are you a vegan?
Marcus – No, I’m a vegetarian actually.
Patrick – Oh, cool. I never knew that about you. Have you been vegetarian for
long?
Marcus – I don’t even keep count anymore but I think it has been roughly two
years. I used to love eating a nice juicy steak, but I just decided it wasn’t what I
wanted for myself for my life to have meat as a main factor of my diet. I have
nothing against anyone who eats meat though. I have great memories of going to
Patrick – That’s cool. Yeah, I’m not one of those people who tries to
convert vegans or vegetarians into meat eaters. To each their own you
know. But that doesn’t affect you with how you work out or anything
because I know you like to lift weights.
Marcus – No, I know what I’m doing I just take a few protein supplements.
I have to say I’ve never felt better. But this has worked for me, I think has
worked so well because I wasn’t feeling so good day to day when I used to
eat meat regularly. But now I am just used to feeling this way, but it is a
big difference for me.
