Lets' get started...

form-match-up

3/1/20XX
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Add,subtract, multiply and divide numbers in standard form
SC1 : Able to add and subtract numbers in Standard form
SC2 : Able to multiply and divide numbers in standard form
SC3 : Able to do challenge questions in standard form

Key Words CCL

Standard form Science
Place value Geography
Index/Power
EXAMPLE : 1 (When the indices are the same)

• These numbers are of the same magnitude (x

10)

• So, we can just add the first numbers

1.2 + 5.3 = 6.5

So, the answer is 6.5 x 10

EXAMPLE : 2 (When the indices are not the same)

5.4 x 10 = 54000

2.2 x 10 = 220000
Add them, 54000 + 220000 = 274000
Then put back into standard form
So, the answer is 2.74 x 10
or

 Change one of the numbers to match

the other

 This would then become

0.54 x 10 So this number
gets one place
bigger
This number
gets one place
smaller
 (0.54 x 10)

0.54 +2.2 = 2.74

So, 2.74 x 10

Note: Alternative method when the

powers are high.

Calculations with multiplication and division
• Work out the powers of 10 separately
• Work out the number calculation
• Ensure the answer is in standard form

Example 1: Calculate 4 × 104 × 2 × 103

104 ×103 = 107
4 ×2 = 8
Answer: 8 × 107
Example 2:
Calculate 8 × 105 × 7 × 104

105 ×104 = 109

8 ×7 = 56

56 × 109
This is not in standard form

Answer: 5.6 × 1010

Example 3: Calculate 9 × 105 ÷ 3 × 102
105 ÷102 = 103
9÷ 3 = 3
Answer : 3 × 103

Or it can be seen this way also : 9 × 105 9 × 105

3 × 102 3 × 102

Cancelling common factors and 9 × 105

applying the index law for division 3 × 102

= 3 × 103

Quick Check

(6.2 x 105 ) + (3.5 x 105 )

9.7 x 10
(3.9 x 103 ) + (4.7 x 104 )

5.09 x 10
(7.3 x 105 ) - (5.4 x 104 )

6.76 x 10
(5.9 x 10 ) - (4.7 x 10 )
-3 -4

5.43 x 10 -3
