• Career choice was nonexistent.
• Your career was what you were born into.
• Individuals followed the path laid down by their circumstances.
• Exceptions: Wealthy or privileged class.
Career now?
• Not much spending of careers at one workplace.
• Work and organizations have become international.
• Diversity in workforce.
• Balance between gender and work.
• Availability of resources – better career/job choices.
• Rapid changes.
• Career planning is becoming more and more challenging.
Recent Career Related Problems:

• Uncertainty or change in career directions.


• Job loss.
• Work-family conflicts.
• Getting the right person into the right place.
• Quality of work life might be compromised.
• Unemployment  health problems, domestic violence, and crime.
• Huge instability in the job market.
• Career quakes (Bolles, 2008).

1. Time extended:
• Not one event or choice.
• Not time limited or tied to one particular job or occupation.
• Rather, life long.
2. Working out:
• Compromises/struggles.
• Tradeoff between what a person might want and what is possible.
• Tradeoff between ideal and real.
• Continuing series of right and wrong choices.
• Costs and risks are involved.
• No perfect career path, but an optimal one.

• Meaning and purpose for the person itself.
• Planned, contemplated, worked on, and executed.

• An activity which produces something of value for oneself and/or
others.
• Paid as well as unpaid (volunteered).
6. Undertaken by the person:
• Unique to the person.
• No two persons can have the same career.

• Occupation: Group of similar positions in different industries and

• Position: Group of tasks.
• Job: Paid position.
“People lose or gain jobs and positions, but not the careers”.
Career Development:

The total constellation of economic, sociological, psychological,


education, physical, and chance factors that combine to shape one’s
career.
