Desktop monitor

WHAT IS A DESKTOP MONITOR?

• Piece of computer hardware - displays the video and graphics
information generated by a connected computer through the computer's
video card.
• A monitor is sometimes referred to as a screen, display, video display,
video display terminal, video display unit, or video screen.

Is a desktop monitor an
input or an output device?
Who can remember?
LCD AND LED MONITORS
• CRT monitors outdated – we use LCD or LED monitors.
• Work by using liquid crystals to produce an image.
• Liquid crystals embedded into display screen. What is the difference
between a LCD and a LED
• Some form of backlight used to illuminate them. monitor?
• When the backlight is activated, it produces light that is
somewhat obstructed by the liquid crystals.
• LCD and LED screens are both types of displays that use
liquid crystals to help create an image.
• The difference between LCD and LED monitor:
– Is in the backlights.
– While a standard LCD monitor uses fluorescent backlights, an LED monitor uses
light-emitting diodes for backlights.
IMPORTANT!
•LEDs are far better than LCD monitors
because they do not use fluorescent bulbs
due to which they are lighter and thinner in
weight.
• LEDs consume less energy and save a lot of
power.
•LEDs provide bright image quality by
enhancing the contrast and enriching the range
of colours.
 Lighter in weight with respect to screen size
 Energy efficient because of lower power
consumption
 Brightness range is too much wider produce very
bright images due to high peak intensity
 Produce lower electric, magnetic and
electromagnetic fields

ADVANTAGES OF
LCD MONITORS
 Suffer from a motion blur effect
 High refresh rate
 Like the backlight ages, it can change colours slightly
 The aspect ratio and resolution are fixed
 Not proficient at producing black or very dark grays colours
 Restricted viewing angles
 Slow response times

DISADVANTAGES
OF LCD MONITORS
SPECIFICATIONS OF LCD
MONITOR

NOTE: This is an extract of the

specifications of the monitor of a
desktop computer. There are more
specifications.
MOST IMPORTANT
SPECIFICATIONS
The specifications listed below are the most important specifications that
you must look at when buying a monitor for your desktop.

Refresh rate The refresh rate of your display refers to how many times
per second the display is able to draw a new image. This is
measured in Hertz (Hz). For example, if your display has a
refresh rate of 144Hz, it is refreshing the image 144 times
per second.
Response time Response time for monitors is the time it takes to shift from
one color to another.
Contrast ratio The contrast ratio (CR) is a property of a display system,
defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest shade
(white) to that of the darkest shade (black) that the system
is capable of producing.
MOST IMPORTANT SPECIFICATIONS
Colour depth The number of bits used to hold a screen pixel. Also called
"pixel depth" and "bit depth," the color depth is the maximum
number of colors that can be displayed. True Color (24-bit
colour) is required for photorealistic images and video, and
modern graphics cards support this bit depth.
Resolution Screen resolution refers to the clarity of the text and images
displayed on your screen. At higher resolutions, such as 1600 x
1200 pixels, items appear sharper.
Aspect ratio The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width to its height,
and is expressed with two numbers separated by a colon, such
as 16:9, sixteen-to-nine. For the x:y aspect ratio, the image is x
units wide and y units high.
Study the specifications of the two monitors.
