Complete Sentence
A complete sentence is not merely a
group of words with a capital letter at
the beginning and a period or question
mark at the end.

A complete sentence has three


components:
 A subject (the actor in the sentence)
 A predicate (the verb or action)
 A complete thought (it can stand
alone and make sense—it’s
COMMON MISTAKE #1:
FRAGMENT
1. Because she thinks she does
not belong to our group.
2. Hates being alone for the past
days.
3. The books on the shelf.
4. If the rain does not stop.
5. Henry wants.
What is a Sentence
Fragment?
• Fragments are incomplete sentences
• Sometimes they are missing a subject, a verb or both
• A sentence fragment is an incomplete thought
• Usually, fragments are pieces of sentences that have been
disconnected from the main clause.

Examples
•Because the car was in the shop.
• Decided to go home home instead .
• The beautiful, calm, elegant girl who sits next to me.
Ways in correcting
Fragmented Sentences
Add the needed
information to the sentence.

Combine the fragment to the


main/independent clause.
Add the needed
information to the sentence.
A. Missing subject
FS: Uploaded their activity sheet on
Google Classroom.
CS: The class mayor uploaded their
activity sheet on Google
Classroom.

B. Missing verb
FS: That time of joy and fun.
CS: That was the time of joy and
fun.
Combine the fragment to the
main/independent clause.

FS: After I take the exam.


CS: I will call you after I take the exam.

FS: When the system fails.


CS: When the system fails, no one is
to be blamed.
Fix the following
fragments:
1. Even though J ill w as a wonderful
person.

2. The windows.

3. Through the door and around the


building.

4. Eating pizza for dinner.

5. Watching Netflix with my friend.


COMMON MISTAKE #2:
RUN-ON SENTENCE
What is a Run-on?
A run-on sentence is a common English
writing mistake that happens when a
sentence incorrectly connects clauses.
Examples
• You think you are happy look at you.
• Harry hosted a party but he did not spend any penny.
• There are doctors coming they will help everyone who is sick.
• I went out so I could get some fresh air.
• Terrence likes going out on Saturdays and he has been doing it
since he was in high school.
Independent vs
Dependent Clause
A clause is a basic unit of language that
includes a subject and a predicate (which
requires at least one verb). A single clause
alone, with proper punctuation, is a
complete sentence.

Ex. I fell asleep.


The TV woke me up.
Usually, you can connect clauses correctly
by adding a comma with a conjunction or
adding a semicolon to the sentence.

Ex. I fell asleep, but the TV woke me up.


I fell asleep; the TV woke me up
Types of Run- on Sentences
Fused sentence
A fused sentence joins two or more
clauses without any punctuation.

Ex. We met for a date there was no


chemistry we won’t meet again.
Comma Splice
Comma splices occur when 2 or
more clauses are separated with
only a comma and are missing a
conjunction.

Ex. We met for a date, there was no


chemistry, we won’t meet again.
Polysyndeton
A polysyndeton is a sentence that
uses too many conjunctions or more
conjunctions than necessary,

Ex. We met for a date there was no


chemistry and we won’t meet
again.
Ways in correcting Run- on
Sentences
Add end punctuation.

Use a comma and


conjunction

Use a semi-colon

Use comma and conjunction.

CS: The cheerleaders got new uniforms; they
cannot wait for the first game in
November.
Fix the following run-ons:
1. Mary came home from work early we worked hard
on our project.
2. I will watch a movie you do your homework.
3. The light is broken the vending machine
still works.
4. Red looks too aggressive for the living
room walls, let’s try blue.
5. The zombie invasion finally came but I am
well prepared so let’s work together.
6. Scarves are popular last season it
improves people’s fashion.
Fix the following comma
splice
1. Jenny is a good friend of mine, she is becoming
a fashion designer.
2. I eat chocolates it is not my absolute favorite
snack.
3. W hen I came home, my dog met me at the
door, I gave her a treat for being so sweet.
4. We have lots of oranges at our place, you can
come and take all you want.
5. Chives are not actually vegetables, they are a
variety of herbs.
Fix the fused sentences.
1. Janine’s uncle never graduated from
high school he started his own company
at the age of 16.
2. I have an expensive computer I have no
regrets buying it.
