Title: Understanding Different Types of Functions

Through Arrow Diagrams.
• Definition:
• A function is a relation between a set of inputs and a set of
permissible outputs.

• Importance of Functions:
• Functions are fundamental in mathematics as they describe
relationships between quantities.
One-One Function (Injective
Function):

Definition: A function 𝑓:𝐴→𝐵 is one-one (injective) if every element

of 𝐴 maps to a unique element of 𝐵.

 Characteristics: No two elements of 𝐴 map to the same element of 𝐵.

• Every element in Set A is mapped to a unique element in Set B, illustrating that no
two different elements in A map to the same element in B.
Many-One Function:

Definition: A function 𝑓:𝐴→𝐵 is called a many-one function if two or

more elements in 𝐴 are mapped to the same element in 𝐵.

Characteristics: There exist at least two elements in 𝐴 with the same

image in 𝐵.

• Here, elements 1 and 2 in Set A are both mapped to the same element 4 in Set
B, illustrating the many-one mapping concept.
Onto Function (Surjective Function):

Definition: A function 𝑓:𝐴→𝐵 is called an onto (surjective) function if

every element of 𝐵 is the image of at least one element of 𝐴.

 Characteristics: Every element of 𝐵 is covered.

• Every element in Set B is covered by at least one element in Set A, demonstrating
that every element in B is mapped from some element in A.
Summary of Function Types:
 One-One Function:
• Definition: Different elements in 𝐴 map to different elements in 𝐵.
• Key Feature: No two elements in 𝐴 map to the same element in 𝐵.

 Onto Function:
• Definition: Every element in 𝐵 is an image of at least one element
in 𝐴.
• Key Feature: All elements in 𝐵 are covered.

 Many-One Function:
• Definition: Two or more elements in 𝐴 map to the same element
in 𝐵.
• Key Feature: Multiple elements in 𝐴 can map to a single element in
𝐵.
