Relations and functions

General Mathematics 11
Perla S. Malit
A relation is a set of ordered pairs.

Domain (x) is a set of all first

coordinates of the relation.
Range(y) is a set of all second
coordinates of the relation.
Domain (x): (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) input
Range (y): (1. 3, 5, 7, 9) output
Representation of relations
Aside from ordered pair, a relation can also
be represented in three(3) different ways:
Example:
1y
x y

1 1 1
2 3 2
3 5 3 3 graph

4 7 Y=x+1

Let’s try:
 Graph and list the domain and range of
each relation. Identify the kind of
relation.

Function
 - is a rule that pairs each element in one
set, called the domain, with exactly one
element from a second set, called the
range

Note: It does not matter if two elements of the
domain are paired with the same
element in the range.

y = 15x Rule: Multiply “x” by 15

y - dependent variable Number of liters of water
x - independent wasted of minutes the

runs

y = 15x

We can also say that

“y is a function of x”
y = f(x)
 Vertical Line Test
If vertical lines crosses the
graph of a relation in more
than one point, the
relation cannot be a
function. If no vertical line crosses
the graph in more than one
point, then the graph is a
graph of a function.

 Example:
1. In the function y = 2x – 5,
calculate the value of y when:
a. x = -2 b. x = 5 c.
x=9
2. If f(x) = 8- 2x – 3, find:
a. f(2) b. f(-4) c.

Summary
 A relation is a set of ordered pairs
that consist domain and range.
 A function is a relation in which
every element in the domain is
mapped to exactly one element in
the range. Meaning: No element
on the domain gets repeated.
