Tarpapel is a combination of tarpaulin
and paper, used for affordable signage
or banners in schools, communities, or
events. And it’s also a common
method used in the Philippines for
making large-scale posters without the
need for a professional printing
service.
Materials Needed:
Microsoft PowerPoint or similar software (for
design)
Bond paper (A4 or letter size)
Printer
Scissors or cutter
Tape or glue (optional: double-sided tape)
Laminating sheet or plastic cover (for durability)
Here’s a step by steps to prepare a
tarpapel
Step 1: Designing Your Tarpapel
 Software: PowerPoint is commonly used because of its
simplicity, but you can also use other tools like Adobe
Photoshop, Canva, or even Microsoft Word.
 Setting the size: In PowerPoint, go to Design > Slide Size >
Custom Slide Size. Change the width and height to match your
banner dimensions. A common tarpapel size could be 3x2 feet
or larger, depending on your needs.
 Content: Add text, images, or shapes that fit your purpose.
Use high-contrast colors so that the text is legible from a
distance. You can use bold fonts for the titles and ensure that
the text is large enough for easy reading.
 Tip: Avoid overcrowding the design. Focus on key messages.
 Graphics and Images: Use high-resolution images to avoid
pixelation when printing. You can also add logos or decorative
Step 2: Dividing the Design for Printing
 Since your final banner size may be larger than a standard printer's
output, divide the design into smaller printable sections.

 Method 1 (PowerPoint): Copy and paste your design into

multiple slides, ensuring each section covers part of the overall
design.

 Method 2 (External Software): Export your design as a high-

resolution image (JPG or PNG), then use image-splitting software
(like Adobe Acrobat, Posterazor, or other online tools) to divide it
into pages.

 Ensure Overlap: Leave a small overlap area on each section

(about 0.5–1 cm) for easier alignment when assembling.
Step 3: Printing

 Paper Type: Standard bond paper is commonly used, but you can
opt for glossy photo paper for a more professional finish. Thicker
paper also helps improve durability.

 Printer Settings: Check your print settings to ensure you’re

printing at the highest resolution for better clarity and avoid
cutting off sections of the design. If possible, do a test print first.
Step 4: Cutting and Assembling

 Trimming: Use a sharp pair of scissors or a paper cutter to trim the

edges, especially the margins, for cleaner joins between each sheet.

 Tip: Use a ruler and cutter for straight, precise cuts.

 Aligning the Sheets: Lay the sheets on a flat surface, arranging them in
the correct order. Use the overlap areas to align them perfectly.

 Taping/Glueing: Use double-sided tape, clear tape, or glue to secure the

sheets together from the back. For cleaner results, tape only the back to
avoid visible marks on the front.
Step 5: Laminating or Protecting (Optional)

 Why laminate?: Laminating or covering with plastic sheets

makes your tarpapel weatherproof and durable, especially for
outdoor use.

 How to laminate: If you have access to a laminating machine,

you can laminate each printed section before assembling.
Alternatively, you can manually cover the entire banner with
plastic wrap or adhesive plastic sheets.
Step 6: Mounting the Tarpapel
 Hanging with tape: You can use clear packing tape to secure your tarpapel on walls or bulletin boards.
Make sure the surface is clean and dry.

 Using Strings: Punch small holes in the corners of the tarpapel and thread string through them for
hanging.

 Framing: For a more formal presentation, you can mount the tarpapel on a cardboard or wood frame.

 Tips for a More Professional Finish:

 Use Glossy Paper: This can give your tarpapel a more polished, professional look, similar to real
tarpaulins.

 Borders and Margins: Add borders to the design for a cleaner, more structured appearance.

 Back Reinforcement: To increase durability, you can reinforce the back of the tarpapel with cardboard
or thicker materials to prevent tearing.

 Seamless Printing: If you have access to a wide-format printer, you can print the tarpapel in one piece,
avoiding the need to assemble it.
