1.1 - RELATION
INTRODUCTION TO SETS A set is a collection of objects with similar characteristics. Set represented by capital letters such as A,B or C. Sets can be represent by Venn diagram. Example:Setsrepresent first five odd 1 3 numbers? 5 7 A={1,3,5,7,9} or9
REPRESENT RELATIONS The relation between two sets is shown by pairing the elements of the sets which are related. The relation between two sets can represented by: a)An arrow diagram b)Ordered pairs c)A graph
Example: Show relation square between set A={0,1,2,3,4} and set B={0,1,4,9,16}. a)Arrow diagram

DOMAIN,CODOMAIN,OBJECT,IMAGE AND RANGE OF A RELATION Relation between Set X which mapped into Set Y: a)Set X is called the domain b)Set Y is called the codomain c)The elements in set X are the objects. d)The elements in set Y are the images.
Example:The arrow diagram shows relation factor between set X and set Y X . Fa cto r of 2 4 Y 3
4 5 6
One-to-many relation
Many-to-one relation
An image in the range has more than one object in the domain.
Many-to-many relation
An object in domain has more than one image in range and an image in range has more than one object in domain.
1.2 FUNCTIONS
RECOGNISE A FUNCTION AS A SPECIAL RELATION. A function is a special relation in which every object in domain has only one image in range. Only a one-to-one relation and manyto-one relation can be a function.
FUNCTION NOTATION Functions can be represented by small letters such as f , g , h. A function f which maps x in the domain onto y in the range can be written f:x y P f
Example:
1 2 3 P 1 4 9 Q f (x ) f (1) y 1
DETERMINE THE IMAGE UNDER A FUNCTION GIVEN THE OBJECT AND VICE VERSA To find image under a function given the object, substitute the value of the object into the function.

Example:
