Functions

This document discusses functions and relations. It defines a set, relation, and function. A relation pairs elements between two sets, while a function ensures each element in the domain has only one image in the range. The document provides examples of different types of relations and how to represent functions using notation. It also explains how to determine the image of an element under a given function and the object that maps to a given image.

1.1 - RELATION
INTRODUCTION TO SETS A set is a collection of objects with similar characteristics. Set represented by capital letters such as A,B or C. Sets can be represent by Venn diagram. Example:Setsrepresent first five odd 1 3 numbers? 5 7 A={1,3,5,7,9} or9

REPRESENT RELATIONS The relation between two sets is shown by pairing the elements of the sets which are related. The relation between two sets can represented by: a)An arrow diagram b)Ordered pairs c)A graph

Example: Show relation square between set A={0,1,2,3,4} and set B={0,1,4,9,16}. a)Arrow diagram

0 1 2 3 4

square of 0 1 4 9 1 6

b)Ordered pairs {(0,0),(1,1),(2,4),(3,9),(4,16)} c)A graph

Set B
16 9 4 1 0 0 3 1 4 2

Set A

DOMAIN,CODOMAIN,OBJECT,IMAGE AND RANGE OF A RELATION Relation between Set X which mapped into Set Y: a)Set X is called the domain b)Set Y is called the codomain c)The elements in set X are the objects. d)The elements in set Y are the images.

Example:The arrow diagram shows relation factor between set X and set Y X . Fa cto r of 2 4 Y 3

4 5 6

Domain:{4,6,9} Codomain:{2,3,4,5,6} Range:{2,3,4,6} 4 is the object of images 2 and 4.

TYPE OF RELATION One-to-one relation

Each objects in domain has only one image in range.

One-to-many relation

Object in domain has many image in range

Many-to-one relation

An image in the range has more than one object in the domain.

Many-to-many relation
An object in domain has more than one image in range and an image in range has more than one object in domain.

1.2 FUNCTIONS
RECOGNISE A FUNCTION AS A SPECIAL RELATION. A function is a special relation in which every object in domain has only one image in range. Only a one-to-one relation and manyto-one relation can be a function.

FUNCTION NOTATION Functions can be represented by small letters such as f , g , h. A function f which maps x in the domain onto y in the range can be written f:x y P f

Example:
1 2 3 P 1 4 9 Q f (x ) f (1) y 1

DETERMINE THE IMAGE UNDER A FUNCTION GIVEN THE OBJECT AND VICE VERSA To find image under a function given the object, substitute the value of the object into the function.

Example:

2)Given that h : x a)h(30) h(30) = 3 sin 30 2 = 3(0.5) 2 = 1.5 2 = 0.5 b)h(90) h(90) = 3 sin 90 2 = 3(1) 2 =1
