Lesson Plan GRCO B2-2

Anticipated Problems

1. How can a person create an original

image?
2. How can multiple images be used to
create a new image?

Vector Images

 A vector image is
an illustration,
logo, drawing, or
other type of
artwork that has a
limited amount of
color and can be
enlarged to any
size without
4 affecting the
quality.
Vector Images

 A vector image
 Unlike pixel-based images, do not rely on
individual pixels or squares of color
 Relies on mathematical coordinates within a
grid system to create shapes

5
Vector Images

 A vector image
 Advantage: The file size is smaller than a
pixel-based image of the same physical size.
 Disadvantage: A limited amount of color is
available compared to a pixel-based image
(photograph).

6
Vector Images

 An original image is an image not copied

from another source.
 There are occasions when a finished vector
image is created from another source or
multiple sources (e.g., photographs, original
sketches, and/or clip art images).

7
Points & Paths

 Points and paths are used to create vector

images.
 A point is the end of a line or a node on a
closed shape, such as a circle.
 An anchor point is another name for a point.
 A path is something that determines the
shape of an image and can be straight or
curved lines or closed shapes.
8
Points & Paths

 Another name for a path is a stroke.

 The stroke can have varied thicknesses,
depending upon the image or design.
 It is measured in points.

9
Fill & Gradient

 Between the paths is the fill—the area that

contains the color.
 Solid colors are only one method of filling an
area. Gradients can be used.
 A gradient is a tonal change of a color, or
colors, used to create a texture or shading
effects.

10
Fill & Gradient
A local organization was in
need of a new logo. Several
sketches were done, and a
final design was selected
(Image 1). The sketch was
scanned and placed into
Adobe® Illustrator. Then the
basic design drawing began
(Image 2). Once the basic
shapes were drawn, the
strokes were defined for
each section (Image 3).
Colors and other elements
were added to complete the
logo (Image 4). (Courtesy,

Saving Files

 Files are saved using file formats.

 The file format is the way a file is saved so
it can be retrieved or utilized by other
graphic programs.

12
Saving Files

 Many file formats

are available, and
the one used
depends upon the
final destination of
the image.

13
Available File Formats

 Encapsulated PostScript or EPS is a

PostScript image file format compatible with
PostScript printers and is often used to
transfer files between various graphics
programs.

14
Available File Formats

 EPS files are too large to be used by many

Web applications, but they are preferred by
most commercial printers.
 An EPS file can be placed into a program such
as Adobe Photoshop, but this program will
®

rasterize the image and make it unscalable.

15
Available File Formats

 Scalable Vector Graphics or SVG is the

description of an image as an application of
the Extensible Markup Language (XML).
 Any program that recognizes XML can display
the image using the information provided in
the SVG format.
 SVG is widely used when the image will be
used in Web applications and in animation
software.
16
Available File Formats

 Portable Document Format or PDF is a file

format that has captured all the elements of
a printed document as an electronic image
that a person can view, navigate, print, or
forward to another person.

17
Available File Formats

 A PDF is created using Adobe Acrobat,

Acrobat Capture, and similar products.
 The PDF file format is compatible with a
variety of applications and is capable of being
used in cross-platform applications.

18
Modify an Image

 To modify is to alter the

original image in such a
way as to create a new
image or change the
existing image to conform
to the finished layout or
design.

19
Modify an Image

 Modifying vector images covers a range of

actions, such as:
 Adding or removing portions of the original
image
 Adding filters to create effects consistent with
the final design or message
 Changing colors or changing the original
image
 Compositing two or more images or elements
20
of multiple images
21
Modify an Image

 Saving modified files

 When modifying any image, it is necessary to
save the file with a different file name than
the original to protect the client’s original
image.

22
Modify an Image

 Saving modified files

 When modifying an image, it is critical to work
with layers.
 A layer is a transparent sheet laid one on top
of the other. This action allows the designer to
arrange effects or areas of the image.

23
Review

1. What is the advantage of a vector image

over a pixel-based image? What is the
disadvantage?
2. Points and paths are used to create vector
images, what is the area in between the
paths?
3. Name three types of file formats discussed
in this lesson.
