Introduction
Oxygen is an essential element for life. It is part of water
molecules and is crucial for the respiration of most living
things.
The oxygen cycle describes the movement of oxygen
through the different components of the Earth: the
atmosphere, the biosphere, the lithosphere and the
oceans.
Definition
The oxygen cycle describes how oxygen moves through
different reservoirs: the atmosphere, the oceans, the
biosphere (living things) and the lithosphere (land). This
biogeochemical cycle ensures that oxygen is constantly
recycled and available to all living things.

Oxygen storage
Oceans
The oceans absorb large amounts of oxygen from the atmosphere and
store it in the form of dissolved oxygen. The amount of oxygen in the
oceans varies with temperature: cold waters can store more oxygen than
warm waters.

Marine ecosystems
Corals, fish and other organisms depend on dissolved oxygen for
respiration. Aquatic plants, such as algae, also produce oxygen that is
released into the water.

Lithosphere
In the Earth's crust, oxygen is present in mineral compounds, such as
silicates and oxides, and plays an important role in long-term geological
processes.
Importance
The oxygen cycle is essential for the functioning of terrestrial
and aquatic ecosystems, as well as for animal and human life.
• Climate balance: Oxygen plays a fundamental role in the
global climate balance, as it directly affects the amount of
CO₂ and other greenhouse gases.
• Healthy ecosystems: The balance between oxygen
production and consumption is crucial for maintaining
ecosystem health. It avoids hypoxia (low oxygen levels) that
can seriously damage species.
