What is the internet and the
web?
The internet is a giant network that connects internet devices all around the world. These devices are
provided with the capability to share data across the internet. Thus, pages of pictures, text, visuals
etc are available (also known as Webpages) and also collections of webpages related to the same
idea by the same organisation (called websites) are available on the internet.

The Web, or WWW (World Wide Web) is an information system that works on the internet that allows
the sharing of files, and webpages across it. Thus, the internet and web are very closely related.

You must have definitely used YouTube, Facebook or Wikipedia at a certain
time. These are all websites. Recall that a website is a collection of
webpages available on the internet via the World Wide Web.

Every website has it’s own domain, or location on the internet. These
domains are special keys that allow access to the website. They are called
hyperlinks (links for short). If you are making a website, you must buy a
domain from a hosting company.

Companies may provide web hosting, to have a website built, then domain,
then published. The fees are usually very high, and thus websites are very
expensive to build. However it may pay off, as you can make money off of a
website too.

Communication
over the
Internet
Topic 2 Objectives:

• To learn about telecommunication

• To learn about the fax, telephone and SMS
• To learn about email
• To learn about Social Media

Project: Creating a newsletter for your blog

What is telecommunication?
Imagine you live far away from your family. How are you likely to communicate with them? People only a hundred
years ago would say they would send letters, or use the telegraph or telephone. A modern person would probably
say email or video conferencing or instant messaging.
These are all forms of telecommunication. Telecommunication is the act of communicating with someone far
away from you.
Telecommunicating has evolved over the years. The earliest forms of telecommunication were the telegraph and
the telephone.
The telegraph is a device capable of sending only one kind of sound across a cable line. The range is not very
good, and only one kind of sound can be sent. However, for this purpose Samuel Morse invented a secret
language known as morse code, a particularly difficult code system involving dots and dashes. The dots were
played as beeps and the dashes as pauses on the telegraph. The receiver would have to decode the message
sent across. It was surely difficult! Morse code can be sent as dots and dashes along a telegraph, or also written
on paper.
ACTIVITY: Morsy Messages!
Use a morse code translator to write your
name in morse code. Write it on paper
using dots and dashes or use a morse
code translator like this one. Challenge
your friends to see if they can guess your
morse messages!
14
The Telephone: The “Modern” Communication
method
The telephone, invented by Alexander
Graham Bell, remained the primary form of
communication in the 19th century. The
telephone consists of a magnetic bobbing
disc in a mouthpiece that converts sound to
electrical signals. These are sent over the
telephone line to the receiver's earpiece
which pumps out the sound. The telephone
line is actually very complex and long, see
top right.
The telephone too has evolved over the
years. Antique telephones were not very

durable, and produced poor quality and
barely understandable sound. Middle
generation telephones were made of
plastics. They were improved greatly.

Email
Email is by far one of the most popular
telecommunication methods today. Email
involves sending a long text across the internet
to a receiver. Email receivers must have an
email address upon which they will receive
emails. Email is used for personal use like
communication, sending pictures and links to
family and friends. Email is used in offices and
corporations to communicate results and share
documents safely and rapidly. Many companies
also market themselves with email just like SMS.

What is Social Media?
At a time, we all have used YouTube, Facebook or Twitter. These are all Social Media applications. Social
Media is a software that allows people over a far distance communicate by sharing text, pictures, and videos
across the internet to them. They thus create a virtual network between people thousands of miles away.

Social media is mainly a form of entertainment. People enjoy watching shows, movies and vlogs (video logs,
you will learn more in the next two units) all for free on YouTube. People use Facebook to keep track of
news and to learn what is going on in the world. People use LinkedIn to find Jobs and to learn about others’
business profiles.

Though it’s benefits, it is harmful in many ways. It can cause people to get distracted from tasks and waste
time. We should use it in a balanced limit.

3. Internet
Safety
Topic 3 objectives:
• Learn about Scams online
• Learn about Firewall, VPN
• Learn about antiviruses

• Topic Project: Testing a VPN

Online
Scams
People are very unaware of the dangers of the online world. It is very easy for online
hackers to steal passwords, personal info and credit card numbers. Many different
scams you may see everyday like confirmshaming, which means switching the “no”
option to something that would guilt the customer such as “Do you wish to Sign Up for
the Video Club?” the options may be “Yes!” or “No, I hate amazing content.” to guilt a
customer into signing up. Another common scam is the bundled software scam. Sites
may advertise themselves as giving a paid software for free but in reality, are being paid
to distribute a different software.

VPN Connections: Masking IP
Addresses
A VPN (Virtual-Private-Network) is a software used to
mask your IP address. An IP Address is like a virtual
license plate, it follows you around the internet providing
your location. A VPN is capable of masking it and
allowing you to hide your identity from hackers.

Antivirus
Recall, what is a virus? A virus is a malicious code set into a
computer to perform harm like slowing down boot systems, stealing
info, credit card passwords, accessing your files etc. You can
prevent viruses with an antivirus program. Antiviruses scan
computer code and files and compare them to their database to
see if any code seems suspicious. Antiviruses are also trained
about the severity of viruses and what to do with them. Small
viruses can be removed, moderate viruses are “isolated,” or kept
away from the computer so they don’t spread, and extreme viruses
are deleted from the system. A good antivirus is normally paid, but
companies do offer free versions with minimalistic features.

25
Firewa
ll
Recall as mentioned at the beginning, what is a firewall? A Firewall
is a sieve or filter used to remove harmful content from entering a
computer via the internet. Every computer is equipped with a basic
firewall but a free, or paid external firewall offers more protection.

A basic firewall that is pre-installed on all Windows PCs is

Windows Security Firewall.
