INTRODUCTION
PLC
The advent of the PLC began in the 1970’s
and since then has begun the most common
choice for the control operations. In the past
humans was the principle method of
controlling a system.Later electrical control
was introduced where it was mainly based on
relays. These relays allow power to be
switched on and off without a mechanical
switch. They were used to make the simplest
Logical and Control Decisions. The recent
development of the low cost computer has
brought forth the recent technological miracle
ITI

the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

3  What is a PLC?
•A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a robust digital
computer specifically designed for industrial automation and
control processes. PLCs are integral to modern
manufacturing systems, providing a reliable means to
automate machinery and processes, thus enhancing
efficiency and reducing human error. It functions to control
logic, sequencing, timing, arithmetic data manipulation and
counting capabilities. At its core, a PLC functions through the
execution of pre-programmed logic, which allows the
controller to process inputs received from various sensors
and devices. These inputs may include signals from
temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and touch buttons,
among others. The PLC then processes this information
according to its programming, which consists of a series of
logical operations and decision-making algorithms and

perfoms the tasks.

ARCHITECTURE OF
PLC
 A Programmable Logic Controller by any company has all
of the following functional units:

 Processor (Logic Server)

 Memory Unit
 Input/ Output (I/O)
 Program Loader
 Power Supply
 The central processing unit provides the intelligence of the controller. It accepts
data, status information from various sensing devices like limit switches,
proximity switches, executes the user control program store in the memory and
gives
ITI appropriate output commands to devices like solenoid valves, switches etc

 USER SOFTWARE
 This is the software that the control engineer writes and stores the
program in the user memory in order to perform the required control
over the machine process. This user software can contain both
configuration data and language program. Two of the software widely
used in PLC :
• LogixPro Simulator
• Delta PLC(ISP Soft)

 LADDER Logic:

Ladder Logic, a graphical programming language, is

predominantly utilized in the field of industrial
automation for programming Programmable Logic
Controllers (PLCs). Its design is inspired by relay logic
diagrams and mimics the schematic representation of
relay circuitry, thereby facilitating ease of
understanding for engineers and technicians familiar
with electrical control systems. The architecture of
Ladder Logic consists of vertical rails representing
electrical power supply and horizontal rungs that
delineate the control logic. Each rung contains
various elements such as contacts, coils, timers, and
counters, which collectively contribute to the
operation of

the system. The primary advantage of
Ladder Logic lies in its straightforward visual
 Structure of the Ladder Diagram
The first PLCs were programmed with a technique that was based on relay logic
8 wiring schematics. This eliminated the need to teach the electricians, technicians
and the engineers to how to program a computer. But now a days the ladder logic is
preferred than the relay logic because it is more flexible and cheap. An example of
ladder logic is given below

 SCADA
• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
refers to a comprehensive system utilized for the
monitoring and control of industrial processes. This
technology is integral in various sectors, including
manufacturing, energy, water treatment, and
transportation. SCADA systems enable operators to
gather real- time data from remote locations,
facilitating informed decision- making and
enhancing operational efficiency.
• At the core of SCADA systems lies the ability to monitor
and control equipment across vast distances. This is
achieved through the use of sensors and control
devices, which collect data and transmit it to a central
computer system where it is analyzed. The central
system presents this information through user-friendly
interfaces, allowing operators to track performance
metrics, identify anomalies, and implement corrective
actions swiftly.

 Factory IO
• Factory IO is a sophisticated software platform
designed to facilitate the simulation and visualization
of industrial automation systems, this interactive tool
serves as a vital resource for engineers, educators,
and students, aiming to enhance understanding of
complex manufacturing processes and automation
technologies.
• Factory IO offers a virtual environment in which
users can create and manipulate factory layouts using
various components such as conveyors, sensors, and
actuators. This flexibility allows for the design of
diverse production scenarios, enabling users to
experiment with configurations and optimize systems
in a risk-free setting. By providing a realistic
representation of physical processes, Factory IO
significantly contributes to the learning experience,
bridging theoretical knowledge with practical
application.
• Furthermore, the software supports integration with
industrial programming languages and automation
platforms, such as PLCs (Programmable Logic
Controllers).
