Computer Network

Emtinan Salem Madi 3168

Identify and discuss the type of network ?

Network is a set of computer connected together for the

purposes of sharing resources , the most common resource
shared today is internet , other shared resources can
include a printer or file server
• local area network (LAN)
• uses cables, radio waves, or infrared signals
• to link computers or peripherals, such as printers, within a
small geographic area, such as a building or a group of
buildings.
• owned and managed by a single person or organization
Wide area network (WAN)
• uses long-distance transmission media to link computers
separated by a few miles or even thousands of miles
• a geographically dispersed collection of LANs
• Internet is the largest WAN; it connects millions of LANs
all over the globe. Unlike a LAN, a WAN is not owned by
a single organization. Instead, it has a collective
ownership or management, like the Internet
metropolitan area network (MAN)
• a network designed for a city or town.
• larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN
• owned by a single government or organization
• example : a network used to connect firehouses across a
region or county and the network that supports a site
which informs travelers of statewide traffic conditions
campus area net- work (CAN)
includes several LANs that are housed in various locations
on a college or business campus
smaller than a WAN
CANs use devices such as switches, hubs, and routers to
interconnect
personal area network (PAN)
a network created among an individual’s own personal
devices, usually within a range of 32 feet
Identify and discuss network topology ?

network topology: The shape or structure of a network, including

the arrangement of the communication links and hardware devices
on the network.
star network: A network in which all network devices connect to
one another through a single central device called the hub node
bus network: A network in which all network devices are connected
to a common backbone that serves as a shared communications
medium.
mesh network: A network that uses multiple access points to link a
series of devices that speak to each other to form a network
connection across a large area.
Identify communication media ?
• Communications media are any material substance that
carries an electronic signal to support communications
between a sending and a receiving device. The
computers and devices on the networks are also
sometimes called network nodes. Organizations can use
networks to share hardware, programs, and databases
and to transmit and receive information, allowing for
improved organizational effectiveness and efficiency.
Wireless Technologies
Define the internet?

• computer network consists of communications media,

devices, and software connecting two or more computer
systems or devices.
Define web technology ?

• Web technologies refers to the way computers/devices communicate

with each other using mark up languages. It info It is communication
across the web, and create, deliver or manage web content using
hypertext markup language (HTML).
• A web page is a web document which is written in in HTML (hypertext
markup language)
• It is said to have brought the world into a small village where people and
devices can communicate to each other seamlessly.
• WWW has allowed for the access of information that would have been
impossible to find or may have been difficult to find without the www
Discuss web application ?

News : The Web is a powerful tool for keeping informed about local, state, national, and global
news. It has an abundance of special-interest coverage and provides the capacity to deliver
deeper analysis of the subject matter. Text and photos are supported by the HTML standard.
Video (sometimes called a Webcast) and audio are provided in a browser through plug-in
technology and in podcasts

Education and Training : Today, institutions and organizations at all levels provide online
education and training, which can be accessed via PCs, tablets, and smartphones. Kahn
Academy, for example, provides free online training and learning in economics, math, banking
and money, biology, chemistry, history, and many other subjects.

Job Information : The Web is also an excellent source of job-related information. People
looking for their first jobs or seeking information about new job opportunities can find a wealth of
information online. Search engines, such as Google or Bing (discussed next)
Search Engines and Web Research : A search engine is a valuable tool that enables you to
find information on the Web by specifying words or phrases known as keywords, which are
related to a topic of interest. You can also use operators such as AND, OR, and NOT for more
precise search results.

Instant Messaging : Instant messaging is online, real-time communication between two or

more people who are connected via the Internet. With instant messaging, participants build
contact lists of people they want to chat with. Some applications allow you to see which of your
contacts are currently logged on to the Internet and available to chat.

Microblogging, Status Updates, and News Feeds : Referred to as a microblogging service,

Twitter is a Web application that allows users to send short text updates (up to 140 characters)
from a smartphone or a Web browser to their Twitter followers.

Conferencing : Some Internet technologies support real-time online conferencing. Participants

dial into a common phone number to share a multiparty phone conversation and, in many
cases, live video of the participants.
Define internet , extranet and cloud computing?
Internet : An intranet is an internal corporate network built using Internet and
World Wide Web standards and products. Employees of an organization can
use an intranet to gain access to corporate information.

Extranet : Such networks are referred to as extranets, which connect people

who are external to the company. An extranet is a network built using Web
technologies that links selected resources of the intranet of a company with its
customers, suppliers, or other business partners.

cloud computing: A computing environment where software and storage are

provided as an Internet service and are accessed with a Web browser
