What is a sequence?
• A sequence is a list of things that follow a
particular pattern/order.
• Each item in a sequence is called term.
• The first term, second term, third term, and so
on are denoted by , and so on.

12
Finite & Infinite
• A sequence that has a last term is a finite sequence.
ex. 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15
1, 2, 3, 4, . . ., 100

• A sequence that has no last term is called an infinite

sequence.
ex. 8, 4, 2, 1, ½, ¼, . . .
13
Sequence as a Function
• A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of all
natural numbers {1, 2, 3, …} or the set {1, 2, 3, …, n}.

Domain: 1, 2, 3, …, n  finite sequence

Domain: 1, 2, 3, …  infinite sequence

14
Sequence as a Function
f(x) = 2x + 3 linear function
f(-2) = 2(-2) + 3 = -1 Domain:
f(-1) = 2(-1) + 3 = 1 Set of all real numbers
f(0) = 2(0) + 3 = 3 …, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
f(1) = 2(1) + 3 = 5
f(2) = 2(2) + 3 = 7
15
Sequence as a Function
 nth term
Domain: 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Sequence: 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .
16
nth Term of a Sequence
• The nth term of a sequence, denoted by , is called the
general term of a sequence. It represents each and
every term of a sequence.

• For this course, the nth term of the sequence is an

explicit formula represented by a function of n.

17
Examples of nth Term formula

18
Listing of Terms of a Sequence
Find the first four terms of the sequence whose th term is .
Solution:
Domain: 1, 2, 3, 4

The first four terms are 5, 7, 9, 11. 19

Listing of Terms of a Sequence
Find the first five terms of each sequence given its nth
term.

-1, 3, 7, 11, 15
10, 20, 40, 80, 160
3, 3/2, 1, 3/4, 3/5
20
Finding Specified Terms
Find the sixth term of the sequence .
Solution:

let n = 6

perform the operations

simplify, if possible

The sixth term of the sequence is -8.

21
How to find the nth Term:
• If the pattern is addition of a common number, the
nth term follows the function

• If the pattern is multiplication of a common

number, the nth term follows the function

22
How to find the nth Term:

term, and determine the nth term.
