• Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
• RTO only defines the amount of time a service can remain unavailable

• Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

• RPO defines the amount of data an organization can afford to lose(defined by time)

?What are storage consistency groups

Consistency groups are meaningful when you are replicating a set of

disks to another set.
What defines consistency is that at the moment an interruption to the
replication occurs, there is no chance that some disks will be farther
along than others.

For example: a database is writing to two replicated LUNs- one is logs,

one is data. You cut the replication and try to bring up the database on
the target LUNs. If you have no consistency, the database LUN will likely
not be in sync with the log LUN, and your database can't be recovered
Snapshot Type
Copy-on-write (COW):Before a write is allowed to a block, copy-on-write moves the original data
block to the snapshot storage
Redirect-on-write(ROW):New writes to the original volume are redirected to another location set
aside for snapshot

VMware Snapshot
?What is a snapshot

A snapshot preserves the state and data of a virtual machine at a specific point in
time(PIT)
VMware Snapshot Type

Standard Snapshot

Quiesce Snapshot
Quiescing is to pause or altering the state of running processes on a computer.

Allowing existing Write I/O to finish their Write(flush buffer) but preventing new
Write I/O from initiating

Microsoft VSS , IBM DB2 , ORACLE Support Quiesce

For example, there may be outstanding I/O that has not been flushed to be written
out, or a DB transaction may still be in progress

• The application(write I/O) freeze is not
allowed to take longer than 60 seconds
• The shadow copy creation can be aborted if
the writers are kept in the freeze state for
longer than 60 seconds or if the providers
take longer than 10 seconds to commit the
shadow copy.

VMware Snapshot(cow)

copy-on-write (COW) mechanism,

in which the virtual disk contains
no data in places, until copied
there by a write. This optimization
saves storage space

Before a write is allowed to a block,

copy-on-write moves the original data
block to the snapshot storage

VMware Site Recovery Manager(SRM) is Orchestration Software that automates the failover and failback
of virtual machines to and from a secondary site using policy-based management

Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) is the Code written by storage vendor to allow SRM to
communicate with storage arrays

Host-based Replication(HBR) or VR(vSphere Replication)

Site Recovery Manager Protection Type
Site Recovery Manager offers two ways of protecting a datacenter.
 vSphere Replication, which works at a host or server virtual machines
level
better fit for Tier 2 and Tier 3 applications which has some limitations)

Array Base which works at a storage array level

used for protecting Tier 1 which are business critical applications.
vSphere Replication Benefit
 better fit for Tier 2 and Tier 3 applications which has some limitations)
Replicate in flexible topologies, e.g., from external SAN/NAS to Virtual SAN—no
need for matching storage at source and target
Provision and manage replication at the VM level—no more replicating LUNs.
Implement with Low Cost

Minimum RPO is 5 minute(ver 6.5)

 Not Support Automated Failback
Array-Base Replication Benifed
Used for protecting Tier 1 which are business critical applications.
Support RPO =0
Support Automated Failback

Implement with High Cost(Need SAN Replication License)

Need Same Storage Type in source and target Site
SRM Multi-Site

Shared Recovery: multiple remote sites are protected by a single recovery site.

Shared Protection: a single site fails over some applications/virtual machines to one remote site and
others to one or more additional remote sites.

Contents of the vSphere Replication Appliance

The vSphere Replication appliance provides all the components that vSphere Replication requires.

 A plug-in to the vSphere Web Client that provides a user interface for vSphere Replication.
 An embedded database that stores replication configuration and management information.
 A vSphere Replication Management Server and a vSphere Replication Server that provide the core
of the vSphere Replication infrastructure.
vSphere Replication Client Plug-In

The vSphere Replication appliance adds a plug-in to the vSphere Web Client.
vSphere Replication client plug-in to perform all vSphere Replication actions

■ Configure the connections between vSphere Replication sites.

■ Configure the replication of individual or multiple virtual machines.
■ Monitor and manage the status of the replications that you set up.
■ Recover virtual machines.
vSphere Replication

• vSphere Replication: Name of the VMware vSphere feature that

enables host-based replication.
• vSphere Replication Management Server(vRMS): Virtual
appliance containing both the management component for vSphere
Replication and the component that receives replicated data (vSphere
Replication Server).
• vSphere Replication Server(vRS): Virtual appliance containing the
component that receives replicated data but does not contain the
vSphere Replication

vSphere Replication uses vSphere’s Changed Block Tracking (CBT)

feature, copying only changed blocks to the recovery site. This lowers
bandwidth utilization and makes it easier to achieve lower recovery
point objectives (RPOs) than doing a full-system copy of VMs
VMware Host Base Replication(vR)

• vSphere Replication Agent(vRA): Component built into vSphere that

tracks the changes in a replicated virtual machine and transmits these
changes to a vSphere Replication Management Server or vSphere
Replication Server virtual appliance.
• Network file copy (NFC) protocol is used to commit network based
disk writes by vSphere. The VRS receives replicated blocks and
distributes them via NFC to the vSphere hosts for writing to storage.
