LECTURE TWO

PERIPHERAL DEVICES

INPUT, OUTPUT & i/o DEVICES

• Definition of Peripheral Devices * Classification of Peripheral

Devices
• Various Examples of Input, Output and I/O Devices
Lecture Objectives:
Upon the completion of this lecture, the students should be
able to:

 define peripheral devices,

 explain the three main categories that make up the

Peripheral devices– Input, Output and I/O devices,

 mention various examples of input, output and I/O

devices;

 state the features of some input, output and I/O devices.

DEFINITION OF PERIPHERAL
The term peripheral device refers to:
all external hardware components that are
attached/connected to a computer system
via ports or wireless medium to enhance
the capabilities/functionalities of the
system unit.

“A peripheral or peripheral device is ancillary

(supplementary) device used to take information into
and get information out of the computer”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral [19-Oct-2020]
CATEGORIES OF PERIPHERAL
DEVICES

These categories are based on the direction

of data/information flow. Some peripherals
send data to the computer, some receive data
from the computer while others can do both;
they can both send and receive data from the
computer.
MAIN CATEGORIES OF
COMPUTER PERIPHERALS

Computer Peripherals can be classified into:

Input Devices,

Output Devices and;

I/O Devices
INPUT DEVICES: DEFINITION & EXAMPLES

ANY HARDWARE COMPONENT THAT

ALLOWS A USER TO ENTER DATA AND
INSTRUCTIONS (COMMAND) INTO A
COMPUTER

EXAMPLES ARE: KEYBOARD, MOUSE,

JOY STICK, SCANNER, LIGHT PEN,
MICROPHONE, DIGITAL CAMERA, TOUCH
SCREEN, BARCODE READER, WEBCAM
E.T.C
3 CLASSES OF INPUT DEVICES
1) KEYBOARD
USED TO ENTER CHARACTERS, FUNCTIONS AND COMMAND INTO THE COMPUTER
SYSTEM BY PRESSING BUTTONS, OR KEYS. IT IS THE PRIMARY DEVICE USED TO ENTER
TEXT.

2) POINTING DEVICE
A HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICE THAT ALLOWS A USER TO INPUT SPATIAL (I.E.,
CONTINUOUS AND MULTI-DIMENSIONAL) DATA TO A COMPUTER. CAD SYSTEMS
AND GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES (GUI) ALLOW THE USER TO CONTROL AND
PROVIDE DATA TO THE COMPUTER USING PHYSICAL GESTURES BY MOVING A
HAND-HELD MOUSE OR SIMILAR DEVICE ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE
PHYSICAL DESKTOP
E.G MOUSE, TRACKBALL, LIGHT PEN, TOUCH SENSITIVE SCREENS

3) DIRECT DATA-ENTRY DEVICES

READ DATA FROM A SOURCE THAT'S PROVIDED AND TRANSFERRED IT DIRECTLY TO
THE COMPUTER SYSTEM.
E.G BARCODE READER, OPTICAL MARK READER, OCR
OUTPUT DEVICES: DEFINITION & EXAMPLES

ANY HARDWARE COMPONENT THAT

GIVES THE RESULTS OF PROCESSED DATA
(INFORMATION) TO THE USER IN A
PERCEPTIBLE FORM

EXAMPLES ARE: MONITOR, PRINTER,

SPEAKER, HEADPHONE, PROJECTOR,
PLOTTER, BRAILLE READER E.T.C
INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICES: DEFINITION & EXAMPLES

THESE ARE CATEGORIZED GENERALLY AS

STORAGE, NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS, USER
INTERFACE OR RELATED HARDWARE SERVICES
THAT USE DISCRETE SYSTEMS TO INTERFACE
WITH A COMPUTER. TO COMMUNICATE, DEVICES
USE PARALLEL OR SERIAL I/O PORTS, OR AN
OVER-THE-AIR SIGNAL.
EXAMPLES ARE:
TOUCH SCREEN, MODEM, HEADSETS (CONSISTS OF
SPEAKERS AND MICROPHONE), FACSIMILE (FAX) (HAS
SCANNER TO SCAN DOCUMENT AND PRINTER TO PRINT
CATEGORIES OF PERIPHERAL DEVICES

I/O DEVICES:
INTERSECTION BETWEEN INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES
KEYBOARD LAYOUTS

KEYBOARD KEYS CAN BE DIVIDED INTO SEVERAL

GROUPS BASED ON FUNCTION:
1) TYPING (ALPHANUMERIC) KEYS. THESE KEYS
INCLUDE LETTER, NUMBER, PUNCTUATION, AND
SYMBOL KEYS FOUND ON A TRADITIONAL
TYPEWRITER.
2) CONTROL KEYS
3) FUNCTION KEYS
4) NAVIGATION KEYS
5) NUMERIC KEYPAD
MOUSE LAYOUTS

A HAND-HELD POINTING DEVICE THAT DETECTS

TWO-DIMENSIONAL MOTION RELATIVE TO A
SURFACE. THIS MOTION IS TYPICALLY TRANSLATED
INTO THE MOTION OF THE POINTER (CALLED A
CURSOR) ON A DISPLAY, WHICH ALLOWS A
SMOOTH CONTROL OF THE GRAPHICAL USER
INTERFACE OF A COMPUTER.
1) TWO BUTTONS (LEFT AND RIGHT) AND;
2) A SCROLL WHEEL (FOR SCROLLING
UP AND DOWN)
VISUAL DISPLAY UNIT (VDU) - MONITOR

Is a display device that can display images, video, or text that is transmitted
electronically. Electronic visual displays include television sets, computer monitors,
and digital signage. They are ubiquitous in mobile computing applications like tablet
computers, smartphones, and information appliances. Many electronic visual displays
are informally referred to as SCREENS.

THEY PRODUCE SOFTCOPY/ELECTRONIC COPY OF INFORMATION

PRINTER

Is a peripheral device that serves the purpose of creating a permanent representation of

text or graphics, usually on paper. While the majority of outputs produced by printers are
readable by humans, there are instances where barcode printers have found a utility
beyond this traditional use.

It produces hardcopy of information.

Types of printers are: Inkjet printers, Thermal printers, Laserjet printers, and 3D printer.
1.
ASSIGNMENT TWO:
Write a short note on each of the following electronic visual displays; stating their technologies, features and applications :

a. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

b. Electroluminescent (EL) display

c. Liquid crystal display (LCD)

d. Light-emitting diode (LED) display

* OLED display

* AMOLED display

e. Plasma (P) display

f. Quantum dot (QD) display

2. In a tabular form, state the differences between CRT, LCD and LED Display.

3. In a tabular form, state the differences between OLED and AMOLED Display
