• Social Studies or Araling Panlipunan is a

subject that studies the interactions
between individuals and their society. It
covers a wide range of topics such as
history, geography, economics, civics, and
sociology.
Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan)

• National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) – Social Studies

is the integrated study of human behavior, institutions, and cultures.
It emphasizes the relationships among individuals, groups, and
environments. It is designed to help learners develop the skills,
knowledge, and values necessary for informed and responsible
citizenship.
• American Historical Association (AHA) – Social Studies is the
study of the human past, present, and future. It includes the study of
history, geography, economics, civics, and sociology.

• K to 12 BEC – Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) is a core subject in the
Philippine K to 12 curriculum. It aims to equip learners with the knowledge,
skills, and values necessary to become informed, engaged, and responsible
citizens. The subject covers a wide range of topics related to society,
history, geography, economics, civics, and culture.
• MATATAG Curriculum – Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) remains a core
subject in the Matatag Curriculum, the revised K to 12 curriculum
implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines. It
aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to
become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens.

 Araling Panlipunan (Social
Studies) plays a crucial role in the
development of elementary learners. It
helps them understand their world,

Panlipunan helps learners understand how
historical events have shaped the present.
Building a Sense of Time – learners learn about
different time periods, cultures, and civilizations,
developing a sense of historical perspective.

Understanding Government – learners learn

about the structure, functions, and
responsibilities of government institutions.
Promoting Civic Engagement – they develop a
sense of civic duty and understand their role as
active citizens.
3. Cultivating Cultural Understanding

Appreciating Diversity – learners explore

promoting tolerance and respect.

 Araling Panlipunan (Social
Studies) is a core subject in the
Philippine education system. Its primary
goal is to develop students into critical,
reflective, productive, and responsible
citizens who are deeply rooted in their
cultural identity and love for the country,
while also possessing a global
perspective and values related to social
issues.

Development of critical thinking skills – learners should

be able to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information
from various sources.
Promotion of civic awareness – learners should
understand their rights, responsibilities, and roles as
citizens in their communities, nation, and the global

By focusing on these goals and emphases, DepEd
aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and
values necessary to become active and engaged
citizens who can contribute positively to society.
