• Social Studies or Araling Panlipunan is a
subject that studies the interactions between individuals and their society. It covers a wide range of topics such as history, geography, economics, civics, and sociology. Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan)
• National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) – Social Studies
is the integrated study of human behavior, institutions, and cultures. It emphasizes the relationships among individuals, groups, and environments. It is designed to help learners develop the skills, knowledge, and values necessary for informed and responsible citizenship. • American Historical Association (AHA) – Social Studies is the study of the human past, present, and future. It includes the study of history, geography, economics, civics, and sociology. Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) Department of Education (DepEd) • K to 12 BEC – Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) is a core subject in the Philippine K to 12 curriculum. It aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. The subject covers a wide range of topics related to society, history, geography, economics, civics, and culture. • MATATAG Curriculum – Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) remains a core subject in the Matatag Curriculum, the revised K to 12 curriculum implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines. It aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. The Importance of Teaching and Studying Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) plays a crucial role in the development of elementary learners. It helps them understand their world, society, and their place within it. 1. Developing Historical Understanding
Contextualizing Current Events – Araling
Panlipunan helps learners understand how historical events have shaped the present. Building a Sense of Time – learners learn about different time periods, cultures, and civilizations, developing a sense of historical perspective. 2. Fostering Civic Awareness
Understanding Government – learners learn
about the structure, functions, and responsibilities of government institutions. Promoting Civic Engagement – they develop a sense of civic duty and understand their role as active citizens. 3. Cultivating Cultural Understanding
Appreciating Diversity – learners explore
different cultures, traditions, and values, promoting tolerance and respect. Building Global Citizenship – they develop a global perspective and understand the interconnectedness of people and cultures. 4. Developing Critical Thinking Skills
Analyzing Information – Araling Panlipunan
encourages learners to analyze information, evaluate sources, and form informed opinions. Problem-Solving – they learn to identify problems, analyze causes, and propose solutions. 5. Preparing for Future Learning

Application of knowledge and skills to real-world

By focusing on these goals and emphases, DepEd aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become active and engaged citizens who can contribute positively to society.
